So I have the documents necessary to update my name on my SSN card, but I see that it's possible to update the gender marker too, even pre-op, with a physician's letter. Would there be an issue if the marker there doesn't match my driver's license? Could updating it mess anything else up prior to surgery? I'm not sure if I should pursue it right now since I have everything I need to update my name there and name/gender marker on my driver's license and I'm dying to get that all done.
Social security made me have them match to change it in social security for me. You can try and see what they say but that was what they required from me. Hugs

Sometimes it helps to be be able to cite their own rules at them:

If they give you any grief, tell them to "check the POMS, RM 10212.200."
This was my case and there weren't any issues. I changed my gender marker on both ssn and insurance before I changed it on my ID lol.

Sounds like you had a different order for yours. They won't let me update my driver's license without social security being updated already.

That's where I found out about the possibility to change the gender marker. I don't have the physician's letter, but I requested it. I NEED to get this ball rolling. I'm tired of being deadname :(

Nope no issues with insurance. I think its because my doc knows the correct codes to list me under. It is kinda cool being asked if I need a pap smear lolol, if only :'( Also I did do my name change the day I changed my gender marker.
I provided a name change order to the SSA and they changed my gender marker while updating my name but I didn't even ask them to change the gender market but I guess they assumed I wanted that updated too.
I know several people who changed both at the same time and didn't have any issues. I changed my name before I was on HRT and then my doctor didn't want to give me a letter. I finally got the letter yesterday and then had a hell of a time getting the SSA to follow their own rules. I spent 30 minutes fighting BS excuses why my letter wasn't sufficient before they would change the gender marker.

I was told that is the rule here in Florida by several people who had gone before me (Social Security has to updated the day before you go to the DMV). But, when I read their rules for gender marker changes yesterday, it said that if you changed your name, you had to go to Social Security first because the name has to match what SSA has in their computers. I had no issues with the DMV the following day. Oh that's great news. I'm tired of waiting for my doctor to get back to me, but I was concerned that the mismatch may cause problems with the driver's license. I'm going to plan on heading to SSA on Monday then.
I went in to update my SS card and got into a pretty big fight about sex vs gender. I ended up being told to "just pick one," but had to pick my birth sex since I didn't have a doctor's note. At that point, though, I had already changed my license gender marker to male. Once I received my updated SS card, I also received my Selective Service card, so I guess they went ahead and changed my SS gender anyway, despite what I picked on my paperwork? Not complaining. I still run into a lot of problems about my SS# "belonging to another individual," though, which is strange because I legally changed my name over a year ago.
I ended up just changing my name on the SSN card and got the letter for the gender marker a few months later. I don't feel like it's worth it to go back and get eye rolled to death again over this change, so I'm planning on just waiting to update that next year after the surgery.
There seems to be issues with credit reports too for some reason even though it's the same SSN for both names.

I can attest to this. All 3 credit bureaus created a separate report for my new name (same SSN). TransUnion caught it on their own after a few months (as cards/loans began changing over to my current name) and merged the reports. It basically tanked my credit history/score for about 2-3 months. You should probably plan on not trying to do anything that requires a credit report for a few months after a name change in order to give things time to update and catch up.
Can't do anything with credit right now anyway. Lost 200 points already. Name change was 5 months ago.

If you haven't already done so, you might want to run https://www.annualcreditreport.com on you credit history. They will not give you your credit score but will provide you with a complete credit history. Mine goes back to 1982 when I took out my first credit card. Unlike other sites, this one is restricted by US law and will not charge you or use your email address for spam. You will need to know personal information such as jobs, addresses you have lived at, phone numbers and a number of other facts to answer the security questions. You can only run this report once a year but you may select one agency now, another in 3 months and so on.
Trans Union was mostly real estate
Experian was bank loans/credit card history
Equifax was bank loans/credit card history

For those that have had the sex on their SSA records changed, it may be wise to order a copy of your numident info from SSA.
In my case, surgery was completed Oct 2003, and I took my letter to SSA in Jan 2004 to update the sex on file. The lady at SSA was pretty clueless, but said that all was done and that she had corrected my information. Over the next few years I had a few non specific problems that I suspected were SSA related, but I blew it off.
Recently I've taken on the task of updating my Texas Birth Certificate, and in my document gathering I ordered a copy of my numident. After it arrived, I was floored to find that the lady at SSA only "reconfirmed" my name change in 2004, and never updated the sex on my file. Almost 13 years post and now I realize that SSA still isn't done. Ugh.
Check to ensure that changes are actually made, and that you weren't just lied to by a clerk at SSA, DMV, etc.
