"All eyes — at least the eyes of those interested in transgender people's rights — are on South Dakota as the deadline approaches for Gov. Dennis Daugaard to sign or veto a bill restricting transgender students' access to restrooms and other gender-segregated facilities.
Daugaard, a Republican, has until 11:59 p.m. Central time Tuesday to either sign or veto the legislation, House Bill 1008. If he does not do either, it will become law automatically."
Hoping for the best . . .
That's what he's going to do. He's not going to act on it and let it become law without his signature so he can bury his head.
I agree with Amy. All he has to do is ignore it. That way he isn't connected to it when he runs for election down the road.

He wont do anything, it will become law and wont get any media attention as conveniently it will be drowned out by all the furore of the super Tuesday results

I fear you're right. I'd see this as some sort of cynical ploy, but I think that they don't believe this is a big deal anyway. In their eyes it's commons sense legislation. They can't imagine why it could possibly be a big deal.
It was vetoed!!!!! YAY!!!

"South Dakota's governor on Tuesday vetoed a bill that would have made the state the first in the U.S. with a law requiring transgender students to use bathrooms and locker rooms that match the gender listed on their birth certificate"
There will be wailing and gnashing of teeth tonight in South Dakota.

Along with some cheering, no doubt.

I hoped that he would veto it but I thought it would be signed. Very happy at being wrong.

"PIERRE, S.D. — South Dakota's governor vetoed a bill Tuesday that would have made the state the first in the U.S. to approve a law requiring transgender students to use bathrooms and locker rooms that match their sex at birth.
Republican Gov. Dennis Daugaard, who initially reacted positively to the proposal but said he needed to research the issue, rejected the bill after the American Civil Liberties Union and the Human Rights Campaign insisted it was discriminatory. In his veto message, Daugaard said the bill "does not address any pressing issue" and such decisions were best left to local school officials."
Well I was wrong he actually vetoed it. Sometimes being wrong is a blessing.
Common sense prevailed. Wow! And from a Republican Governor!
That's surprising and awesome!
Lets hope this is a start of a TREND :D
I think it just means its a hot potato and he's passing it off to someone else. Typical politician.

Maybe. I'll take it! Our opponents being too fearful or embarrassed to do things against us is the first step towards acceptance. I will admit that it can put us in a particularly precarious position in the short term. People with strong feelings who think they're losing legally are more likely to respond illegally.
Yes I'll take it as well. Trends and demographics are against society's bigots and this is another defeat for them.
I think allowing us to use the correct bathroom is such a no-brainer that once someone understands the issues, there's no way they can compassionately disagree. Once Daugaard allowed it to be explained to him, I'm sure he saw how awful this law is. My worry was that he'd sign it anyway.
Lawmakers fail to override transgender bill veto

"PIERRE, S.D. — The South Dakota House failed on Thursday to override the governor's veto of a bill that would have required transgender students to use bathrooms corresponding with their birth gender, though the bill's main sponsor suggested that supporters regroup and come back with a "better, stronger bill." "
Whew. That was a close one. Our community really dodged a bullet. I wonder if that will be enough to get us to be more proactive in the future.
