Title: Birth Order and Trans
Post by: KarlMars on March 14, 2016, 09:41:47 AM
I was wondering if birth order had anything to do with transexuals?

I have one younger brother with severe autism, and bi polar
I have bi polar disorder and tourettes.

I want to compare birth order of siblings, and if they or you have any disabilities.

Oldest.  I show some very, very, very mild symptoms of Aspergers but have never been diagnosed.

I was born second.  I had an older sister that died during or soon after birth.  I have one younger brother.  None of us have any disabilities that I know of.

First born.

Far as I know none of the others have any diagnosed mental conditions or superpowers.

I did see a study suggesting sons among the younger siblings of a family had a higher incidence of homosexuality that was not affected by family dynamics or socialization. It's suspected that their mothers' bodies undergo changes when gestating boys that affects subsequent sons. Since there's apparently evidence suggesting exposure to certain hormones in utero affect the brain development of transsexuals, I wonder if there is some kind of correlation with birth order as well... not necessarily related to the "fraternal birth order effect" but it seems evident that the mother's body changes over time and with multiple gestations, and this does potentially impact developing brain and/or identity and sexuality of the fetus. Or perhaps the mother's own hormonal/mental balance just directly affects the fetus.

My mother said she did a lot of drugs and partying before I was uh... 'blessed' with life, which might also have something to do with how I developed. Miracle I came out with normal numbers of limbs, really.

I am the middle of three.  No disabilities in the family, though I find it interesting that my older brother is gay.  We are of the generation where DES could have been a factor, though my mother is no longer alive, so there is no way to confirm that.

I'm the oldest of two. I have severe depression and my younger brother is bipolar. We've both been close to suicide countless times.

I am an only child. I have a history of depression/bipolar 2. If I was a kid today, experts would probably feel the need to diagnose me with autism spectrum disorder... but I'm in my mid 30s so I was just considered antisocial and scientifically inclined...

I'm the youngest of 4 kids (I have 3 older sisters). I've never been diagnosed with any type of disability, though I have suffered from undiagnosed ADD since I was a child.

I am 3rd of 3.

My brother suffers from depression.

I have depression from being trans which I am working on. My wife who works in early intervention says I have many of the signs of being on the spectrum of autism but I am not autistic. I stim, do ritualistic rubbing with my fingers and  with my teeth (it is a geometric pattern and I have done this since I was a child) and two weeks ago my wife flipped when I was eating soup with one hand and moving my fingers in front of my eyes with the other ( we were at a restaurant). When I was young my dad made a point that I look people in the eyes. Over and over he would reinforce his expectation. I work on being social and have made great progress.

I think we've found previously that birth order has absolutely no bearing on whether someone is transgender, and the above list confirms that.

Second of three, all boys (well for now, all boys), both parents have passed, one from lung cancer, one for Alzheimer. We are all veterans. Very middle-middle class, grew up in the late 50's thru the early 70's, in a large eastern city.

The very idea of being transgender then was out of the question. I could have my dreams but society had you locked in to your roles from birth. How I didn't kill myself between then and now, God only knows.

I don't think so.

I'm my parent's only child together, but I have 4 half/step siblings. I'm the oldest out of everyone. My half brother has ADD and an unspecified mood disorder. The oldest of my stepsisters has BPD like me, but we have no blood relation. My two younger stepsisters are twins and I don't think they have any conditions.

AFAIK, I'm the only trans person in my entire family.

Both my sister (19 months younger than me) and I have Crohn's Disease. My youngest sister escaped Crohn's but has undiagnosed psych issues.

I'm the oldest of 3. Two younger brothers. I'm the only one who doesn't identify as cis and straight and perfectly """normal""" by mainstream society standards. As far as I know.  I've been the outcast since day one and my family has accepted it even if they tease me about it still (I've not come out to them as anything but I feel they wouldn't be super surprised at this point). I feel I must have some kind of mental thing going on but have never been diagnosed. Scared of therapy. Past trouble with ocd and gross intrusive thoughts. My mom's oldest brother has aspergers and I used to wonder if I had it a bit but now I'm wondering if it's been dysphoria all along, I just didn't recognize it and tried to label it something else.

Oldest of 3.

The youngest is blessed with not a single care in the world for anybody's opinion of them.

The oldest is a manipulative @#%$#% of a drama queen.

No actual disabilities though.

I believe there is a strong correlation with first child. Most transgender people seem to be first born and 79% of families in the US have an oldest child.

There was even a poll here a while back. https://www.susans.org/forums/index.php/topic,184018.40.html

I myself am an only child and I had ADHD symptoms when I was younger.

It has been suggested that I may be prone to depression or be bipolar (unsure because dysphoria, hormones, and inability to get to a psychiatrist make this difficult to determine) or have mild AIS based on a lack of masculation prior to HRT.

I don't think birth order matters. I'm the oldest of 4 between both of my parents and I have 3 half brothers. All boys. No diagnosed or undiagnosed mental or physical disabilities in my family. I'm the odd man out, as everyone else is "normal".  The only medical problems in my family are my dad's high cholesterol, my peach allergy and me and my 2nd brother are allergic to cats.

Youngest of six with a family history of substance abuse and suicide, yet I have never been addicted to anything afaik and never considered suicide outside of being trans. Everyone else seems to be cisgender and straight in my entire family.

Second and Last!
My sister doesn't have anything, and,
Well, I was diagnosed with Asperger syndrome when I was a child but since I reached 9 it doesn't affect anything (like nothing at all).
Oh and also, when I was 1 I used to die (I'm being serious) for a while with no way of reviving me, externally like shocks or anything, just randomly die to revive on my own after 10 minutes to an hour. Only thing they could do for me was keep my dead body warm. I haven't managed to find a name but I grew out of it after a couple of months or a year maybe.

                                                                           Love, Sarina!

I am also the oldest. No disabilities between my brother and I. It appears on this thread and the poll linked that there is some correlation between being transgender and the oldest sibling, but there should be a formal study done to verify this.

I got diagnosed Asperger's syndrome (a couple of years before I realized I'm trans) and the doctors wanted to find out if I had ADD too. But I refused ADD examination, because I don't want to get the wrong diagnose for second time. I'm transgender as well. Hasn't get the diagnose, but I know myself so much that I know it.

It's not necessary your sibling feels like they are born in the wrong body, just because they are transgender. Being trans isn't about feeling like you're born in the wrong body. It's about you thinks your own genitalia etc. don't match your true gender identity. Your sex organs and gender identity don't match, because difference developing.

That's good that you have never been addicted to anything. I've never had a problem with substance abuse, but every suicide attempt I have had was based on being female. Is your family understanding and accepting of you? Hope your suicide attempts are gone now.

For me it would also be about having a male identity and being viewed as a man instead of a woman. To look the way I feel on the inside and express myself through male clothing.

I have an older brother and an older sister, a younger brother and a younger sister. I'm smack dab in the middle. I  am likely on the autism spectrum, but have not pursued it so who knows. I have mild bi-polar, as I don't get too manic very often. Depression can be bad. I also have GAD and have suffered with anxiety for my whole life. My siblings have battled anxiety, depression, heavy drug and alcohol use, and many mental illnesses including schizophrenia and bi-polar.

I've heard of studies where the youngest in certain groups were the most likely to be gay. I am the baby of the family. In my group we have first borns, babies, in tweeners.

I once read "The Birth Order Book" by Dr. Kevin Leman. Amazingly, when I opened it in the library to the chapter on "The Baby" it started with "If you are the baby of the family you most likely opened this book up to this chapter first......"  I was hooked. BTW - It is a great read.

Part of what I learned from it was it is not birth order but also spacing between births and the genders that come into play for various traits
