Title: Talking to my doctor
Post by: GarryLynn on March 18, 2016, 09:32:08 AM
I'm seeing my doctor in a few days about getting hormones. What do I say when I get there? What kinds of things do they usually talk or ask about?

Who are you seeing, a GP, an endocrinologist, a therapist? First appointment they probably want to get to know you and your goals for a treatment plan.

Well I'm going to talking to my family doctor first from there and she'll probably send me to one of those places. Basically I'm starting at step one and I'm kind of nervous and don't really know how to begin or what to expect

GarryLynn,

There are a number of ways to go about this if you are 18+. However seeing your age, this will be something that your Mom or legal guardian will have to work with as well.

It is good to have all of your doctors on the same page(plus sometimes they can point you in the right fastest direction). Depending on the state you are in, you might need to get a letter from a psychologist or psychiatrist before being able to go to an endocrinologist for HRT. Often that includes a few months of visiting and therapy. I think therapy is really important as you go through such big changes and decisions anyway(my 2 cents).

It can be scary to talk to doctors but their concern should be your health not anything to do with how you identify. Most are just trying to help. Be honest and up front. Try not to be too disappointed if what they suggest seems like it will take a long time. It has been said by many that this journey is a marathon, not a sprint.

I think I saw in a post that your Mom is frightened by the potential side effects of hormones. You might look to get blockers first. At 16 you have not finished growing into all your genetic sex qualities. Rarely do doctors let minors start estrogen till they reach 18 but the blockers can stop some of those qualities. From there you can continue change when you reach 18. If your Mom is advised and overcomes her fear I think(not sure, may depend on the state too) she can give permission to advance with full treatment.

I think you may not have had a number of helpful links sent to you. You might have read these before but if not, please take a moment and read through them:
