Title: Can I transition with broad manly shoulders :( ?
Post by: blossom on March 19, 2016, 04:56:44 PM
I'm probably not going to fit in female clothes because my shoulders are so broad.

I have medium-broad type shoulders.. May I ask how far into transitioning you are?

Prior to transition I had the classic inverted triangle shape. I wore a 44 short suit jacket and size 32 pants. I have been on HRT a little more than 2 years and have lost most of the bulk in my upper body. I even have a visible collar bone now. It will take time, but your body will eventually become more feminine.

Just go for it! Prior to transitioning, I wore a 46 coat and 32 pants. I could do 20 pull-ups and 7 one arm pushups. After 2+ years of HRT, I can still do 2-3 pull-ups and at least 1 one-arm pushups. But my skin is soft, and the muscles are more rounded. A couple of days ago, I was in the locker room of a yoga studio where I am pretty much stealth (except for a couple of teachers and students, and I NEVER talk trans issues with them). This woman looked at my arms and said, "I have arm envy." I said I used to lift weights a lot. Then she started talking about having a personal trainer. You'll be amazed how much people just generally talk about themselves and really don't inquire a whole lot about you when it's just a casual meeting. (I live in So Cal, and it may be different in the mid-west or Texas).

I must advise, do fix how you walk. A masculine walk, with shoulders swinging, will make your shoulders pop out. You don't need to swing your hips wildly, just have a nice, feminine gait. Also, I can't stress this enough, fix your voice. I had a deep booming voice, but with hours and hours of practice and help from a speech therapist, I know have a soft, high pitched feminine voice. Everybody expects to hear a deep voice from a transwoman, and when they hear a realistic feminine voice, they see you as a woman.

Thats my advice for what it is worth. Go out there and keep your head up and life a beautiful life as an athletic woman.

How far along am I? Pretty far. I've done electrolysis, hrt, hair transplants in temples to give an arc female hairline, had an orchiectomy and i'll have ffs in about a year. Oh, and I grew my buzz cut to shoulder length hair.

Oh wow..
I was agreeing with the other comments, saying that it should change.. it just gives time. Most cases take about 2-3 years, and for the FULL transition, 5-6 years. You'll be able to fit. I promise you.

Not sure how broad your shoulders are, but...
Maybe try wearing bigger (XX+?) sizes for tops and most dresses, and the smaller size for bottoms?
It's what I've been doing, and I'm pretty big in the shoulders and ribcage.

And fashion wise try V-Necks! There supposed to make the top part look smaller according to my research!

One thing I'll add, is that women come in all shapes and sizes. I know we would all love to have the classic female bod, but.... many cis women wish the same thing! Take a look around next time you are out shopping at the varying sizes and shapes women come in, you'd be surprised how many of the physical characteristics that we are quick to label 'masculine' show up. My wife (who is pretty petite) has what we lovingly refer to as 'swimmer shoulders' but really they are just broad and masculine lol! See what I'm getting at here?

Also the ladies before me mentioned losing some bulk, and another thing is you'll probably gain some around your hips which helps with the overall proportions :) I had all of the  same questions and fears, and at the end of the day, I though heck, I'd rather live a flourishing life as a mediocre looking woman than as a decent looking male that was a total PITA curmudgeon!!

PITA:  pain in the a*!

Curmudgeon:  "person (especially an old man) who is easily annoyed or angered and who often complains" (http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/curmudgeon).

At least that's what I think they mean :-)
