Title: Rengar's Beard Journey
Post by: Rengar on March 19, 2016, 06:56:45 PM
Hello everyone!

I've always wanted to start my own testosterone thread. I've never seen a beard journey before. So I wanted to share my experiences with you and answer any and all questions you might have about bearding. I'm not nearly where I want to be yet but I'll get there and you can too!

I'll do my best to update this post frequently with my week to week/month to month progress, Vitamins I'm using at the time, etc.
Through out all of this I went through a 35~lb weight loss so you get to see a weight drop in my face WOW!!

Let's get started :^)
Every album marked with "m" is for months. That's how many months I was on Testosterone at the time. Not how old the beard is!
I completely stopped shaving on August 1st 2015. I started Testosterone April 15th 2014.

March 3/19/2016 Log: My beard is still a baby. My mustache is still vellus hair. I'm not using any supplements at this point but I am shampooing/conditioning once every week! I finally started carving out a jawline :^)

You can really see the big jump from June-July of last year. Why do you think it grew so much in a month?

It could have been the flash or it could have just jump started during that point. I DID however start a work out regimen to lose more weight so that could've been a big factor for a testosterone boost!

This is a cool topic. Facial hair progress tracks is something I'm always looking for when exploring transition stories. I'm pre-T for now so I like to see how this sort of thing varies for individuals. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that I'll get lucky.

What kind of products do you use on your beard? I honestly never even knew about all of the extensive beard grooming (aside from trimming) until I started looking up shaving tips.

I don't use a whole lot on it right now except for a little bit (just a pea amount) of shampoo/conditioner once a week! I was taking Super collagen+ from Neocell from October - January.

I am looking into some beard oils from Lush and Dollar Beard Club. From what I've seen its always good to use jojoba oil as well. I may end up making my own oils since I like to know the ingredients of the stuff I put on my body. (I make my own deodorant and toothpaste because I'm a FILTHY HIPPY)

I'm always happy when you post facial hair threads! It looks great man. I took your advice from another thread and also stopped shaving completely to let things grow in. I also stepped up my skin care regimen and noticed A LOT of improvement in the hair growth department. The left side of my jaw is growing in a lot more than the right side, but that seemed to be common based on another discussion on here. Hopefully my mustache will darken up and I'll get some hair higher up than the jaw.

Thank you again for posting this! I'm looking forward to updates. If you end up trying any of the Dollar Beard Club stuff, let me know how you like it.

It keeps your beard and skin moisturized (Unfortunately it doesn't prevent acne). So your beard won't get itchy or get dandruff. I use a brand I found on amazon Grave Before Shave. I've been using it since I started noticing facial hair. I also never shaved but, i kept everything trimmed down so I don't look a hot mess. Beard shampoo is nice too.

Great to see how well your facial hair is growing. I'm still frustrated that I have no visible facial hair; guess that's the curse of being blond  >:(. I doubt I'll look how you did at 8 months.

Hey Elis, I'm at around 7.5 months and actually have quite a bit of hair on my chain and the upper part of my face below my ears--the hair on the chin is about a half inch long, I've just been letting it grow.  However, like you, it's blonde (just like my dang eyebrows which I pencil in because my hair--which was blonde as a kid--is now brown) so I got that Just For Men beard dye and it was AWESOME.  One box can dye your facial hair several times, it only takes 5 minutes, and it made a huge difference in my passing ability.  It is REALLY annoying when you actually have quite a bit of facial hair but it can't be seen!  I am hoping someday it will turn brown, but since my eyebrows are blonde I am thinking it may not.  But hey, that's what beard dye is for!  It costs like $20, but like I said, you can dye it a half a dozen to a dozen times before you run out depending on how much facial hair you have.

It takes time. Take a look at that 8 months. Not a whole lot there. I was very upset with my 8 months way back when lmao. I wanted a beard so damn bad :'^(.

I didn't see good progress until June of 2015. After about a year my facial hair jumpstarted. Have a look at your father and your maternal grandfather. If they're hairy then chanced are you will be too!

Hello it's me
California Rengar coming to you live from my Girlfriend's Studio Apartment that I wish was a 2 bedroom near El Segundo!!! But beggars can't be choosers! (I just wish it was closer to our jobs >:^( Soon though. Soon)

I'm back here with a late July beard update. I just took these photos literally 10 minutes ago.

I added a longer distance picture of me to see what it looks like from afar (not too bad) the mustache is TRYING TO COME IN.

Notes: I've now been on Testosterone for 2 years and 3 months boy howdy it's been a ride. I stopped using oil because I forgot it back in Colorado as well as my clippers. Just shampooing it frequently and conditioning only once a week. I haven't trimmed but kind of tried to on the day of my interview with Square Enix. They're a big ol game company so they weren't too upset with a few stray hairs!

I'm gonna try growing it out until October so we'll see where I get >:^) Looking back at last July it's a big huge giant difference and I'm hoping to a have a nice full beard in another year v _____v (please).

Let me know if you have any questions :^)

Looks very good man! Mine has been very itchy with how hot it's been so I broke down and trimmed it wayyy down yesterday. Kudos to you for pressing on.

How did the interview with Square Enix go? I'm a fan :)

I've found once it gets long it stops being itchy but that's alright if you trimmed! It'll come back!

It went very well. I've been added to a talent pool and I'm just waiting to hear back. My girlfriend works there so she gave me a good referral :^)

He's back. Send him back.

Hello bearders and hopeful bearders! Comin back at you with another monthly update.

Y'all need to remember that for some reason I get super excited and take many pictures (too many) of my beard when it comes to these monthly updates. Now if only I was as consistent with going to the gym as I was with this (oh well)...

Here's the update for August 2016! I'm now officially 2 years and 4 months on testosterone in all of these photos.
I've got Long beard pics and short beard pics.
But Rengar-kun what does that mean? Well it means I grew that beard out for 3 months without giving it a trim. Why'd I trim? I love my girlfriend and I also love myself so I didn't like the raggedy look.

LET'S GET STARTED! Gonna be givin you guys two sets. Long beard and short beard.
Long beard:
(https://www.susans.org/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimages.yuku.com%2Fimage%2Fjpg%2F3080d69dd42d47589f1440126c2e6c76_r.jpg%3F1472858903&hash=3a0324e09d612a1212833802a4b84cc569cf75bc)(https://www.susans.org/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimages.yuku.com%2Fimage%2Fjpg%2F3e1927e228894d78a99fccecf80aeba5_r.jpg%3F1472858924&hash=d65a41efbd9067da6d3229aeb5834ae9f862ebda)(https://www.susans.org/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimages.yuku.com%2Fimage%2Fjpg%2F39fa36e249314bd78e58dbd2380566db_r.jpg%3F1472858944&hash=b622df59bdef9efc6949568b73538687fe3319b4)

There's a cute pic of me and my gf at Disneyland just in case you're like "Rengar please stop. I don't want to be in your face just show me the beard at a distance because that's what counts. PLEASE."

Short trimmed beard:
(https://www.susans.org/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimages.yuku.com%2Fimage%2Fjpg%2F0059bb3f6333413d8b9f3a9be6ded765_r.jpg%3F1472859047&hash=607f316e9d6462c3bf3d72bba213e1b2b51c30b6)(https://www.susans.org/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimages.yuku.com%2Fimage%2Fjpg%2F46148b6c0ba94700a83a81840ee42777_r.jpg%3F1472859072&hash=096709b5bfef805b56f56e7935dd492d2d5662ff)(https://www.susans.org/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimages.yuku.com%2Fimage%2Fjpg%2Fba9658539e4f4547a7e26c382e0b1eb6_r.jpg%3F1472859088&hash=8cfc8eac63bc757da0ff20646d2c7774e8605440)

Added another cute pic of me after I trimmed for those people that don't wanna be in my face.
Full August 2016 Album: http://rengar.jefffsbeardboard.yuku.com/album/897291

And there you have it folks! There's a lot of pictures in there but I hope you can decipher which ones are long photos and which ones are my trimmed photos :'^o.

Also my hair grows curly (it's a curse) and I get a lot of ingrown hairs so please forgive my genes.

Notes: Obviously more length = darker beard but I'm not at the point where I can grow it out real long and have it look real good. Soon though. I have a very good pattern coming in imo. If I got in real close to my eyeballs you could see more hair growing. But I'm into that whole wolf man in the woods look. I'm lucky my girlfriend thinks I'm cute no matter what so I CAN be a wolf man one day.

Gonna start using some beard oil here soon. Haven't been using any products. Just been growin the ol boy and taking my testosterone shots weekly. Oh and I read a forum on here once where someone was really eager to grow. Please don't give yourself a shot in your face. That's not how anatomy works and it's not going to do anything positive for you.

Well that's my update for August! See you at the end of September.

I've also got a big problem with ingrown hairs, curly hairs, and mine also grow in in weird directions, and Anthony Ingrown Hair Treatment has made a huge difference with the ingrown hairs. It's expensive but last a really long time.

I just envy those of you who can grow a beard. I'd be happy if I can grow a Fu Manchu soon  ::). Can't fight genetic.

Wow I'll definitely have to try this stuff out. It gets so bad when I get a haircut too > :^( Thank you for the suggestion!

6 months later I'm dusting off this ol topic!

Hello! I've been away for quite some time but I've got some good excuses. In January I returned from 6 months of hell in a hand basket in L.A. I moved out to L.A to follow my girlfriend but it didn't end so well so I moved myself back to Colorado. I went through a very rough recovery process and I'm finally starting to feel better!!

But if there's anything I love to do it's document my beard process. Unfortunately I have no pictures for December as that was the toughest part of the process (this is when i found out things weren't as nice as they seemed).

Without any further ado! My beard journey for the last six months!

That's all for now fellow bearders (or hopeful bearders)! My goal is to look like a wolf man viking but I gotta put some muscle on first ahah!

Notes: That mustache is ever so slowly getting thicker. Much better than it was this time last year. Noticing huge strides and the beard looks pretty full albiet thin but thickness will come with time and continued HRT.

Started using Kalamazoo from Lush! Very nice on the beard and face. Makes my beard feel like head hair to be honest with you. I rub that in for a good 2 minutes every other shower day and pat it dry. I also comb it out. If you comb your beard in a certain way your body tends to grow it that way which is what I've noticed from combing my little chocolate milk stache out of my mouth.

Tips: Rub that face daily. Give it lots of love. This will cause the blood to really flow in your face and that's very good for beard growth! You can also try biotin!

And with that I'll leave you this picture of me that I snapped tonight. Wolf boy needs a haircut but I've got that Floki from Vikings vibe goin on!

(https://www.susans.org/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimages.yuku.com%2Fimage%2Fjpg%2F66b57bb82185454985e470b7db327559_r.jpg%3F1488698297&hash=002624a4e06b510c68ea23e6fa6983cb2f68de57)

Keep up the great work you guys! And if you have any questions please feel free to ask!! I'd love to see some of your beard journeys too.

Looks so good man! Sorry that LA didn't work out for you, but glad you were feeling good enough today to update.

I'm curious and wasn't sure if it had been mentioned or asked previously - could you talk about the facial hair genetics in your family? I'm in an FTM Mentor group and this gets asked so often.

Thanks, Max! It's always great to hear from you :^)

My brother and entire side of my mother's family can grow great beards and mustaches! We are almost half italian and the other half is English and Irish with a little bit of everything else. My father couldn't grow a very strong beard but his mustache was great! My grandfather on that side on the other hand can grow both a strong beard and a strong mustache.

I only ever saw my father with a mustache. He unfortunately passed when I was 6 but here's a photo for reference! (https://scontent-dft4-2.xx.fbcdn.net/v/t1.0-9/577026_350986058329509_1613642626_n.jpg?oh=490bbd886f93dc690aac21de244e4ee6&oe=5970CC74)

My maternal grandfather also sported a very thick mustache in the 80's
(https://scontent-dft4-2.xx.fbcdn.net/v/t34.0-12/1079166_10152507707884254_1870377894_n.jpg?oh=0a060c2c25c763f4c9da352811b52104&oe=58BF3ABF)

My paternal grandfather still has facial hair :^)!

And here is a photo of my brother. He likes to keep his trim and usually in a chinstrap but this was the most full I could find it:

My Uncle on my mother's side can grow a grizzly adams beard and my uncle on my father's side only grows the mustache as well. With all that in mind I should be able to grow a pretty good beard in the next few years.

If you look at all the vellus hairs I have I'd say I've got a pretty good pattern going! Here's another good look at those hairs (https://www.susans.org/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimages.yuku.com%2Fimage%2Fjpg%2F0dfbe4d0d46e4e5fa7441ac8b39a2b2b_r.jpg%3F1488739998&hash=147ccd4ca2f195f37045b6e7cdf59a5303448fbd)
You can especially see them in my mustache but vellus hairs are a good sign that those hairs will eventually become terminal. It's just a matter of time.

Dude, your beard is looking amazing. I'll bet in the next year it will fill out a ton. 10/10 definitely jealous.

Mine's finally starting to grow in some sort of sad pattern (a year and almost 5 months in) but being patient is frustrating as ****.
I keep getting these random really dark hairs on the upper parts of my cheeks but nothing really in between them and my chinstrap. Sort of odd, but I assume it will all eventually fill out. I really want it to start growing on my actual chin instead of just underneath it, too.

Hey there! It's nice to see your beard growing in full throttle, also you haven't touched your razor since last two years, right? Great dedication! Noticed what you said, you started using natural beard oil, may be that would be one of the reasons of beard hair growth and some of it also depends on genetics, we can't deny the fact that this point matters too. To grow beard naturally, home remedies like applying eucalyptus oil or castor oil or minoxidil oil would also work wonders for you. In your grooming regimen, inclusion of beard growth products like beard oils, beard wash or beard vitamins will also be effective. Apart from that, start exercising regularly for proper blood circulation throughout your body and eat a proper diet. I hope this will help you to grow a fuller and healthy beard soon.

I have a potentially dumb question. How can you tell the difference between the three stages of hair? I'm assuming peach fuzz just looks white and kinda fluffy and doesn't really grow but are vellus hairs the same color and grow? Or do they change color and are just really thin? I'm totally confused!
Title: Re: Rengar's Beard Journey
Post by: Rengar on May 05, 2017, 03:01:44 AM
You're correct! Vellus or (peach fuzz) is the white long hairs on your face. When a beard hair turns into a transitional hair it's white at the tips and a darker colour through out. When a hair turns terminal it becomes course and dark!

I've just pasted the year mark and have a lot of vellus hair with some becoming transitional. I am hoping that by the time school starts in the fall I won't look 12 any more.

Thank you for the clarification too. It's become even more frustrating for me that I still have peach fuzz instead of terminal facial hair; apart from a few bits at the sides of my 'moustache'  >:(. My T levels are well within the male range but I guess I'm just the unlucky few.

Rubbing against the grain I guess you can detect where they're all activating, even where they haven't turned dark yet.

Notes: OFFICIALLY THREE WHOLE YEARS (give or take a few missed shots :^)c) ON TESTOSTERONE. Mustache is still trying to fill in. Doing a lot better than before. I had to trim at the end of May for my little sister's graduation. The clippers my older sister bought me for christmas only went up to 4 so I was cryin. The pictures from May show my beard untouched by clippers for 3 months. Last time I trimmed was in February :'^).

Still using Kalamazoo from LUSH every Monday and Friday. I don't touch my beard very often unless I'm stroking it while talking or thinking ahaha. I use Beard balm when it gets longer and I bought a viking bone comb from Grimfrost which feels really nice.

I started a bodyweight work out regime and I've been eating healthy since April!

Took the picture on the left today to show somebody my super cool new shirt but this is what the beard is lookin like from afar and the other is a picture of me and my buddy from LAST June to show the difference in growth:

(Don't be alarmed I work for a school ahaha)

I'll try my best to update next month but just know: I take beard pictures once every month regardless unless I'm in some kind of emotional trap.

Not a whole lot to report! Still using Kalamazoo. A pretzel fell into my beard and stayed there for a while. I can shove a comb in there and it stays.
Went to the barber and got it trimmed for the first time! She did a great job.

I'll post em as soon as I can bring myself to actually HOOK UP MY PHONE TO MY COMPUTER o(-(

So anyways here's how the beard's lookin nowadays.

Here's a pic of me and my gf :^) The beard was trimmed and relatively short here. This was this February (https://pbs.twimg.com/media/DYLz-RDVAAAfc0y.jpg)

This was taken yesterday and please excuse my vulgar gang hand signs. You can really see how far the beard crawls up my face and I don't plan on shaving up there. I will fully embrace this werewolf transformation.

I need to get it trimmed again but lately I've just been letting it grow. I got into the habit of skipping my shot cause I hate doin it so I slowed my progress down. My doctor was like "you imbecile" and I finally set an alarm to take it every Friday SO IT'S ALL GOOD NOW.......

Still using Kalamazoo Mondays and Fridays and combing it with this comb!!!! https://grimfrost.com/collections/beards/products/viking-comb-horn
