RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — North Carolina lawmakers return to work in a special session Wednesday to consider stopping a new Charlotte ordinance set to take effect April 1 that gives protections to transgender people to use the restroom of their gender identity.
Proposed legislation is expected to go beyond just overturning Charlotte's broader LGBT ordinance. All local governments statewide could be barred from prohibiting discrimination in public accommodations based on sexual orientation and gender identity going forward, as Charlotte did.

But with the support of the governor, this one's not looking good for Charlotte and NC.
I hope the transgender community in NC can succeed in educating their legislators in a hurry.
NC House passes bill blocking Charlotte transgender ordinance

RALEIGH --
House lawmakers working in a special session passed a bill Wednesday blocking any local government in North Carolina from passing an ordinance like the one Charlotte recently approved allowing transgender people to use the restroom aligned with their gender identity. The bill now goes to the Senate.
So the party of limited government is not loathe to swing that big government hammer when it suits their own prejudices and purposes.

Hmmm... I like how they didn't explain exactly what the ordinance was, even vaguely. I mean, I'm sure I could find out if I dug around enough, but perhaps The Advocate could have provided a link to a previous story explaining what it is for those of us not in the know? I mean, I'm sure this development is bad, considering it's the GOP, but other than that I have no clue what's going on with this story or how I should feel about this.
Bad reporting, Advocate. Bad reporting.

"The US state of North Carolina has passed a law which voids all local ordinances protecting LGBT rights."
It's official peeps... :'(
I hate this state so much. I mean yeah, there are worse, but who the hell wants to live there?
from the article:
"This is really not about bathrooms," said Democratic Rep. Rodney Moore of Charlotte. "This is about fear."

In short:
House Bill 2, the Public Facilities Privacy & Security Act, puts in place a statewide policy that bans individuals from using public bathrooms that do not correspond to their biological sex.
The bill also reserves the right to pass nondiscrimination legislation to the state government, saying state laws preempt any local ordinances.
I seriously cannot believe that this just happened. I just saw it in my news feed, and, well, looks like 85%+ of trans people in North Carolina (plus many intersex people, which is equally screwed up,) now have no choice but to either put themselves in potential danger, and out themselves as trans to EVERYONE they know by following the law and using the bathroom on their birth certificate, or break the law every time they need to pee.
I just cannot believe this.
This is a dark dark day in American trans* history.
I can't believe we passed this.... Truly disgusting...
I would really love to see Buck Angel and a Hundred other Trans-men hold a "Pee-In" in the legislator's women's room next to the legislator's wives. Then they might realize how ridiculous their fears are.

Heaven help us. I'm shocked and very disappointed in my country for letting this happen. I fear this is just one of many dominoes.
