Title: Is there a makeover service that caters to transgenders in Sydney?
Post by: jayne01 on March 28, 2016, 07:13:14 AM
Hi,

Does any body know of a place in Sydney, Australia that provides a makeover service where I could learn how to dress, apply makeup, etc so that I can look ok, that caters to the trans community? I don't have a clue where to begin. I can see myself looking like a clown if I tried to use makeup on my own.

I am very shy and only my wife and therapist know about me being trans. I want to start and try dressing up at home to try and reduce some of the dysphoria. My wife is ok with that, but I would really like some help so that I can try and make myself as passable as I can and not look like a circus clown.

There are style and image advisers who do home visits.

If you call and explain the situation its possible they are delighted to help and give you a makeover.

Another possibility could be to ask at transgender groups or lgbt centers if there might be someone.

Most of the make up counters will happily show you their wares/give you a make over. A number of places do offer make up courses or classes......they may be willing to assist in something more specific and discrete. You could ask the Gender Centre in Annandale if they know of anyone.....

Hi Jayne;
You could try:

The Beauty Room
Beauty Salon
Address: 220 Goulburn St, Darlinghurst NSW 2010
Phone:(02) 9212 4844

They are Trans friendly. I have my nails and toenails done there when I am in Sydney and I am sure they will give you a Makeup lesson

That would be a useful service, sometimes we have a lot of catching up to do even when it comes to the basics. I would suggest that there are many useful videos on YouTube that might be if some assistance. As with teen cis girls, it's all a matter of practice and trial and error. They of course had ample opportunity to learn by the time they reached adulthood. The way you present - clothes, make up, etc, is a personal preference so even a makeover service mightn't give you the look you are looking for.

Thank you all for the replies. I don't know if I could bring myself to go to the make up counters you see in department stores. I'd be a nervous wreck. Actually I'm becoming a nervous wreck now just thinking about it.

If I could find some place that is private and discreet I could maybe do it. Holy crap!!! What was I thinking??? Now that I'm thinking about it I don't think I could do it in public at all. I think YouTube might be my friend for now.

I don't think I thought this through very well. Me!!! Presenting as female in public!!!!! WTF?????? I think I need to go sit and just breath.

Don't panic. You live in Australia, so I would wager you're not in any danger.

You're very concerned about what others think, so you should move in small increments. Maybe first lose some weight and start growing your hair out. Then when this feels normal to you and those you know, add some gender neutral items to your wardrobe and shave some body hair. Then shape your eyebrows, etc...

If you keep moving forward at a comfortable pace, your mind will become more placid. Just make sure you don't stop.

There are style advisers.
They have a look at people and tell depending on their skin, hair colour etc what colours suit them best.
For example brownish colours... etc. There are colour palettes, depending on type.
They advise on makeup, clothing, hair style etc.

They do home visits.

So it should be possible to call one or two of them and ask if they would help a transgender person get a female image.
Its their job to advise on image and its possible a few persons are thrilled by the prospect.
You might simply ask around.

I may not be in danger, maybe?? Except from possibly myself. I might be in danger of undoing the acceptance I am finding so hard to hold on to. I can already sense myself falling back into that denial, shame frame of mind. I know what I look like and I simply cannot picture myself even remotely looking female. All I can see in my mind is a circus freak. That is part of the reason I am looking for someone that knows how to make a guy look like a girl. I live in outer southwest Sydney and if I look the way I fear I would look in women's clothes, my safety may truly be in jeopardy.

I am really starting to have doubts I can do this. I don't have that kind of self confidence.

Baby steps then.
And don't overthink.

Start with a few easy things.
Womens clothes ... for example plain cloth trousers, and sweaters. They can already give a feminine touch.
You can look in the mirror, only at the body, and enjoy your feelings.

Then its a wig ... and growing hair out ...
The wig should cover the brows and forehead.
Look up pictures of Isley Reust as example.

Try some easy makeup.
Maybe liquid foundation. It should be written on it it covers well.
Its easy to apply, just let it melt a bit on your fingers. Just apply, don't cake on.
A lipstick in unobtrusive colours.
And a volumizing mascara.

Et voila for the beginning.

Refinements are always possible later.

Thanks Laura. I'll give it a go. Everything seems so surreal at the moment. I can't believe this is actually happening, that I actually am trans. So much to process.

Try to get used to the thought.

You can try a few things ... like as said some trousers for women, and some sweaters.
Enjoy the feelings. its possible this gives you a feeling of joy.

Regardless of age this is an opportunity to remake yourself.
To kind of start anew, or explore new sides of you.
Many people would give a lot for such an opportunity.

Just do what you feel brings you some joy ...

This all is a process. Just keep going and do it step by step.
