So I went to my NHS gatekeeping appointment about two months ago and was told there is at least a year waiting list for Charing Cross. I was looking forward to that appointment for ages, and very excited, but now it's done it is such a big gap, the psychiatrist told me to transition gently, in terms of using makeup, clothes, hair, voice etc in a way that makes me comfortable.
Things I have done -
Changed my name and gender on Deedpoll
Changed my name and gender on most official documents
Growing hair longer
Trying to wear slightly more feminine clothes, however it is difficult due to my build
Does anyone have any tips what to do next?
Here are a few things that can be done privately:

Unless you are from Wales you might also asked to be referred to another clinic... there are lists with waiting times, the laurels for example have a shorter waiting list.
Well voice training could be an idea ... it takes some time and consistency.

I am from wales sadly :P

Imo it comes down to persistent training ...
a few minutes a day for a few weeks or months ...
just don't overstrain the voice, stop then ...
Trying a few variations like trying to be more breathy and using much more going up and down with intonation within words can also be helpful. And recording it, and listening to results and variations for the effect.
Just be persistent, others have done it too :)

I was referred to the GIC last June, and I have my first assessment next week. Even since before the referral I've been been working on weight-loss (had alot to loose), mild body mannerisms (I.e. Knees together), Facial hair removal, hair loss treatments and more recently working on my voice. I've done all this without being out publically or at work, just to close family and a few friends. Through all this I've been working with a therapist to support my journey, and they've been invaluable.
