Title: Have you ever experienced blatant transphobia
Post by: stephaniec on April 05, 2016, 02:12:51 AM
I have experienced it from a woman my age who owns a café I use to go to. I'm too embarrassed to discuss details but I believe it was mega transphobia which stopped me from going into the café again.

I got fired from a job because of my trans* status, in addition to several instances where I was scoffed at in public, someone took a picture of me while laughing because apparently I was that freaking fascinating to them, and an older gentleman came up to me in a restaurant and said to my face "If my kids went out dressed like that, I'd slap them."

Transphobia is all too real, unfortunately.

Whatever he was, he was not a gentleman. I would have told him that if he threatened me I would tear his arm off, stick it down his throat and he can scratch his testicles internally.

I had one instance when I was blocked for a position at work by a transphobic executive. I complained to the CEO and I think that guy is now selling coffee in a Gloria Jeans.

Transphobia exists for sure, but we fight it by showing that we are normal good people and use the Law when need be.

Apart from my gym experience (https://www.susans.org/forums/index.php?topic=188177.0) in May last year*, fortunately I have not.

*(And I wouldn't really call that blatant transphobia but it sure reeked of ignorance.)

I experienced transphobia on many occasions. A few months ago I was on the street wearing my heels and was spat in my face. I also got rejected fro a job while I was the best candidate in terms of experience and was told that trans people may be fun at parties, but not at a work place, to mention just two examples.

I think if someone spat at me they'd get a brick thrown at them,. The estrogen has calmed me down quite a bit , I used to get to the brink of violence quite easily although I was able to not cross that line.

Only from two groups of people. My parents are a continuous source of transphobia aimed directly at me any time we are in contact. The other one was a job. After an interview, someone else far less qualified was hired instead of me after I just knocked the interview out of the park. Of course I can't prove the motives behind it, but I have a pretty clear idea.

Those are my only two examples though. I live in a very accepting area (Albuquerque, NM) and nobody really bothers me. Actually, almost everyone I meet here is more than accepting.

I have had the picture thing happen to and it wasn't fun. Not sure why they were acting the way they did. Hugs

In short yes and too many incidents to mention them all,
The worst, and prolonged in nature and was my parents/family trying to make me hate myself as much as they do,
I don't take it as much as used to I'm getting stronger,

Yes, some people have been rather mean and nasty, it's actually kinda triggering to think about but also probably something that should be discussed

I have only experienced transphobia once.  It was on Facebook and they were some Australian men.. really nasty comments...like Steph I used to be a very agressive and a good fighter, I would have punched their lights out.  But now I just blocked them.

Only from my dad really. Surprisingly I've had no issues when being out and about. Might just be where I live though.

Unfortunately yes. The worst was where I work. I used to be so afraid each day to go into my job knowing the crap I was going to get. It was incredibly stressful.

I got bullied in the workplace when I transitioned; it was a miserable experience, and there was nothing that could be done about it, as it was subtle harassment; and people within groups of like minded individuals, literally saying nasty things behind my back, so I couldn't say for sure who said it. I started sending out resume's 3 months later, and accepted a job offer at the first place I interviewed with; it was so much better starting fresh where no one knew me pre transition.

I know the type of people I worked with and I know what would of happened if I had transitioned working with them.

I've had fairly minor stuff but that makes none of it right or acceptable. Snickers, sounds under peoples breath and the picture thing a few times.

I've walked away from the odd confrontation (I thankfully never reached the last resort of actually having to fight) and was once spat on from a passing car.  This sort of thing just strengthened my resolve to not give them any victory whatsoever by suppressing who I am.
My favourite encounter was with a gang of young local tearaways:
"Oi, mate, do you still dress up like a girl?"
"Yeah, if I feel like it."
(pause)
"Alright then".

Looking back, though. I'm lucky not to have encountered anyone who was serious about doing me harm.

Been refused treatment from doctors, also had specialists cancel appointments on me once they read I was trans. Medical people are pretty much the only people that know so I can only imagine how bad it is for people who are open about being trans.

During the years of my transition, I was publicly humiliated, chased, followed, thrown out of restrooms, fired, laid off, legally hampered.... And then all became pretty normal for many years. Recently, I was blackmailed by my ex and he followed through with it with my neighbors who are no longer HIS neighbors. They won't give me the time of day now and hardly acknowledge a "Good morning neighbor!" when I see them. Last year, I was watering their house plants while they were on vacation. I've lived here for 15 years and never has this been an issue. They didn't know. Now they do.

I don't dwell on it. I could wreck my self esteem.

this is pretty sad , I really didn't expect all this craziness when I posted. What happened to me shocked me to tears because I thought she was becoming a friend and it really came out of no where.  I'm just lucky that in the 29 months I've been transitioning this was the only incident, but it gave me a slap in the face.
