Title: Disappointed and sad
Post by: Emjay on April 08, 2016, 12:43:44 AM
My job is in maintenance supervision in a manufacturing plant.   Tonight I was asked to look at a potential water leak in the women's locker room so in I go with the person who asked me to look at it.   I don't really use the bathrooms at work if I don't have to but that's just me.  I've been out at work and full time for 6 months now so this isn't anything new.

Anyway I'm in the locker room looking at these pipes and in walks another female employee.  The first thing that happens is I'm asked to leave so she can go to the bathroom.

Idk......  I'm just kind of heartbroken by that.   I'm not allowed in the men's rooms anymore (nor do I ever want anything to do with them again either) but the company will allow me to use the women's per company policy so I'm allowed.   Just the attitude really bugged me.   I'll get over it, just hit me pretty hard and I wanted to say it somewhere.    :-\

I am sorry that happened to you but perhaps next time you should say "Sorry but this bathroom is out of order and you will have to use the mens bathroom".

I think there are two issues and they are separate. One if the bathroom is out of order and your are the maintenance person you ask them to leave as it is unsafe to use the facility when it is being repaired.

Second I suggest you start owning your space as a female employee. Putting off not using the bathroom will not gain acceptance, using the bathroom that you should be using and are legally entitled to will gain you acceptance.

And a big hug for a nasty experience :-*

Thank you Cindy, and you're absolutely correct.   I do need to start owning my space.   I let the comfort of others come before mine pretty much every time.  It's nothing new, this has been my default my whole life and it really does need to stop.  Definitely homework for me.

Like I said earlier, it just hit me hard at an already hard time in my life.   My work takes so much of my family time away and I feel like I'm sacrificing so much already.  Just to have that on top of everything else.........

On the plus side it was a false alarm and no maintenance was necessary so that's good.

Thanks everyone, I really appreciate the responses.

the major point is the OK from management. I could suggest other things you could of told that person , but I don't think it's allowed on the site.

Indeed, well said!

Yeah, with an ok from management in particular... Let her get on HR's bad list for complaining :)

Plus 2 on this because the fact is that is the only way they are going to start learning you belong there to and except that. Hugs
