Title: Need a Referral to an Excellent Doc in Florida
Post by: JulieK on April 23, 2016, 12:37:26 AM
Having recently moved to Southwest Florida, I'm in need for a new doctor. I'm just about out of hormones, and need to find an experienced doctor who is trans friendly. Ideally they have lots of trans patients, and know our community well.

I'm willing to travel as far north as Tampa, and as far south as Naples. If necessary, I can go to Miami/Ft. lauderdale. I live near Ft. Myers.

Does anyone have a recommendation? If so, please share your experience. Thanks!

Welcome to Susan's Place. Somebody may check in with a name because we have members in Florida but if they don't, people often get names from their LGBT center. If you have insurance, the policy may have covered doctors in you area which would greatly reduce medical cost. If noting else, googling "city transgender doctors" or what ever you are interested in brings up some useful results. I was able to google the local LGBT center and they had a list of resources on line. Feel free to ask an other questions you might have and we will do our best to answer them.

We issue to all new members the following links so you will best be able to use the web site.

Nice to hear from you. Therapist? No, not since I transitioned 8 years or more ago. As much as I appreciate their help initially, I think I could teach them a lot. That's living the life will do for you.

Great, thank you. She's further than I'd like to travel, but will keep her in mind. How did you find her?

I understand about the distance!  She was one of the choices provided by my therapist and have I have spoken to the first transwoman  she treated about 18 years ago!

I really like her, she is very professional and friendly once she knows you better.

Good luck

Hi Julie, welcome to southwest Florida.  I am also in the Fort Myers area just over the bridge.  I have my first appointment with Dr. Sweet next week.  I cant really give a recommendation yet other than he does treat trans patients.  I know its not much help but welcome to the area

Thanks for the welcome. We like it here so far. The summer (April to October) heat takes some adjustment, but it's better than freezing or having cabin fever.

I'll definitely consider that doc, thanks.

Since there's already a thread specifically about South Florida doctors, I wonder if anyone has suggestions for therapists and endocrinologists in the downtown Miami area? While Hollywood isn't as far a drive for me as it is from Ft. Meyers, it is still a distance.

My endocrinologist is Dr Dimarco in Clearwater. Very knowledgeable about trans issues and very open to letting you choose the route of administration you feel comfortable with.

There are others in the St Pete and Sarasota area who are also recommended by local gender therapists. Sometimes just a phone call to a local therapist is what you need to do for unbiased opinions.
