Title: Getting my ears pierced tomorrow - what to expect
Post by: Elis on April 23, 2016, 06:49:15 AM
After much deliberating I've decided to just go for it and get my ears pierced :). I've been waiting for the 'right' time for a while and sussed up the pros and cons; which have mainly been will earrings suit me? It's kind of a pointless thing to worry about I know. It's impossible for earrings not to look good on anybody. But yet I won't know until my appointment tomorrow which seems a long wait. Also I'd be lying if I said I wasn't worried about the pain  ::). I assume they'll use a needle seeing as I'm going to a professional piercing studio instead of going to Claire 's accessories like I did at 13; where they used a piercing gun.
From watching this video it doesn't look 'too' terrible :P

At least it can't be any worse than having a blood test done right? :D

So what were your experiences getting your ears pierced? And is there anything else I should consider first?

Thanks :)

I had mine done with a piercing gun. It was over in a few seconds and never hurt at all.

The main thing is to keep any piercings sterile for a week or so afterwards and to rotate the shaft of the piercing so it doesn't heal up over the shaft. If they're a professional studio then I'm sure they'll give you the right after care instructions. I expect that hey will also use properly sterilised equipment and single use needles to avoid blood borne viruses (eg hep C, hep B, HIV) and infections.

Hi Elis,

I have had my ears pierced twice, one time at a shopping mall using a piercing gun, and once by my girlfriend using the sterile cartridge they use in the store. It doesn't hurt much and is over in less than a minute.  As others have said, just keep the piercings clean - they supply you with antibacterial wash at the place I went - and move the studs daily by rotating them or pushing them up and down. That usually happens when I clean them anyway. Once they have been in about six weeks, you can take the piercing studs out and put in whatever you want.

Hope that helps,

Terri

In my experience it didn't hurt. I've had it done a few times but eventually left the things out too long and one of the holes closed up. That was after... 10 years of it being open so I guess they can still close at any time if they want to.

I'm too lazy to go back and get it done again, and I guess I just don't have much interest in wearing ear jewelry myself anymore.

Thanks for the advice everyone :). When I had my ears pierced before I rotated the jewellery not the shaft. Maybe that's why I had trouble with my old ear piercing.

T.G.K.W- Do you not have an interest in earrings anymore because you realised you identify as a guy and now look more masculine? Another thing I worry about is looking d**chey or growing bored of them. They also didn't heal properly last time I had them done even though I looked after them as instructed :/

No, not really... I just found that the routine of cleaning the studs, rings or cuffs and remembering to take them out at certain times to be something that I was forgetting to do, what with my routine being so busy these days. I just have so little time for most things besides work that my brain has become a sieve for anything that isn't related to it. I know several guys with far more piercings than me, and I don't consider any of it unmasculine. I think plenty of earwear can look good on guys too.

I have become a bit less interested in putting stuff like that on in the last few years as I became more and more busy. I dress functional mostly now, and spend most of the time getting dirty in the studio, so I just put my ear gear away and kinda forgot about it till you brought it up just now.

Good to know :). I'm unemployed atm so thought it would be as good a time as any to get my ears pierced now.

So had my ear piercing done :). Much less painful than I thought it would be (seemed to hurt less than the piercing gun). Overall I was worrying about nothing :D.
