Title: May have found a therapist.
Post by: VivianB on April 29, 2016, 12:29:27 PM
I may have finally found a therapist. I learned that she specializes in transgender issues. I have not called her yet since I have to get my wisdom teeth pulled on Thursday. But after that I hope I can see this therapist. Just thinking that this is another step to become the woman I want to be is exciting. Any advice about questions to ask her or what to prepare for?

Congratulations :)

You might ask them:
how they see their role
how many transgender clients they have
how long usually until a letter for hrt

here are some online therapists as fall back :

Hey, that's great news! Good questions to ask from Laura, ditto. You could try setting something up before your dumb teeth (that's what I call them) get removed. I'm an impatient person in general, so that's just my style :)

The wisdom teeth aren't too bad btw. What I found was really great to sooth the pain, was a warm washcloth. Just heat up some water or use the microwave.

I do have a question about Transgender therapists. Do I have to see a regular Doctor before seeing a Transgender therapist?

That depends on from which country you are from.

In the UK it may be possible to see a doctor and ask for a referral to a GIC.
Its also possible to self refer, and to go private to shorten the process significantly.

In other countries like the us people go to a gender therapist, get a letter for hrt there and start hormone therapy, if thats what they want. Online therapists also can write letters.

Its also possible to go informed consent where there is a short evaluation for mental fitness and then hrt can be started.
Many people have a gender therapist in parallel though to help with issues.

Well I looked it up and found out that I don't have to see a regular Doctor to a Therapist. The Therapist specializes in Transgender issues which is great. However I told my family that I plan to see a Therapist for anxiety. I don't want them to know about me being Transgender yet.

Is there a way to put this topic under Therapy?
