Title: It Looks Like I've Lost (for now) A Brother
Post by: BeverlyAnn on May 01, 2016, 08:59:39 PM
With all the positive responses I'm received from my letter, I got a lukewarm text response from my brother simply saying, "This will take time," which I'm sure was sent by my sister-in-law.   I'm not friends with him or her on Facebook but my wife's sister is.  She mentioned a comment he made on Facebook regarding the bathroom issues and she asked if he would deny me access to the proper restroom/changing room.  His response was not at all encouraging and, in fact, made me quite angry.  I guess what hurts the most is with my father being career Army and my mother working different shifts as a civil service nurse in an Army hospital, up until I was 18 and he was 10 at lot of his childcare was done by me.  To be honest I really expected it because, let's just say, he has always been homophobic and racist so him being transphobic doesn't surprise me.

I have the acceptance of one sister and I think the other one is out there laughing

Really sorry to hear about your brother, BeverlyAnn. It sounds like your sister in law might be more on your side though?

Meghan, the sister-in-law that is positive is my wife's sister.  As for my sister-in-law, my brother's wife, I'm not really sure what her feelings are but in most instances she'll side with my brother on anything.

Please don't give up hope. The bad news is that you can't force someone to be educated about why we transition. The good news is that education is a one-way process. Once he becomes educated he won't ever "unlearn".

Hugs. It hurts to lose a relative, maybe all the more because it was due to his own willful ignorance.

Hugs. Sorry to hear that, but at least it doesn't sound like an outright rejection... "This will take time" is more promising than "Never talk to me again". I've pretty much lost both my brother and sister out of this. My sister was the greatest disappointment since I really believed I could count on her for support and acceptance, but nope. I do hold out hope they will both come around... until they do they're both out of my will!
