Title: What am I missing?
Post by: ozmadude on May 05, 2016, 12:11:36 AM
OK, I was visiting another city, and I took the opportunity to dress up and go out in public when I knew nobody would recognize me.   I went to walmart at 11PM, mostly because it was the only thing open.  I got a lot of stares, but this didn't really bother me that much since I was way over dressed for Walmart.  But then when I was leaving the store 2 teenage girls saw me briefly at the exit and then laughed out loud and said "OMG" in unison.  The thing is, I am not sure how they could tell I am cross dressing so quckly.   I walk really smoothly in heels, my makeup was perfect.  What is giving me away?  Some photos below, sorry for the bad lighting:

Way, way overdressed for WalMart, or almost anything outside of high end dining or a few clubs.  You stand out because, well, you stand out.  That invites close inspection, which you don't really want if you are trying to pass stealth.

You might want to shift your wardrobe a bit towards what women typically wear in the environment you go out in. For example, I went to a group session held in a medical complex today, so I dressed like an office worker there.  Flats, black pant, simple top.   I don't think I got a second glance anywhere.

I would only add that you really do look great and passable but, as Michelle says, perhaps too overdressed in this case.

Were you wearing the mask out? I'm just thinking that the dress, gloves, and mask would draw attention in Walmart.  It's an adorable outfit and well put together but not something Walmart folks are used to (even without the mask) . I'm hoping you just used the mask for the photo op.

As others said I'd opt for a more low key outfit to blend in.  Flats as you are tall, and less eye catching dress (that one is awesome though, and I'm envious).  Use that outfit for a fancy party

I was in Salem Mass last year, and there was a CDer out and about. It wasn't that they were a CDer that made me notice them, it was how she was dressed, which was way over the top, actually more than what you were, but it is kinda the same thing. You were noticed easily because you stood out so much, so when people see someone dressed up like that, plus being taller than most other women, and wearing heels besides, it is hard not to notice someone like that. Then of course, it becomes more noticeable that you are a CDer. The reactions were not just that you were a CDer by the girls, but how you presented yourself.

Well, I knew I was overdressed.  I just really like it wearing heels and dresses like this.  Thanks for the feedback.

Hey, for us, most of the time we dress it is for a special occasion. I wouldn't get down on yourself. You don't look bad, but in a walmart or similar place, when you dress that way, you re likely to get clocked a lot easier.
