Title: How long did it take for you to get top surgery?
Post by: Meowt on May 12, 2016, 04:45:14 AM
I've recently spoken to my GP and requested top surgery due to extreme back & rib pain, and I was referred sometime last week.

I know each place is different, but how long did it take for you to receive your first appointment/consultation, and then how long was it between then and surgery?

Just wondering what to expect, fingers crossed it'll be soon :)

Thanks in advance

I called for a consult in January 2015, got my consult mid-February 2015, did all my pre-op lab work and clearances in March, and had top surgery at the end of April 2015.

But I'm not in the UK, so might not be relevant for you :/

mine was government funded (canada) but it went pretty quickly compared to others. i had an appointment with the counselor (august? 2014) which was just me explaining i knew the risks and what they do for the procedure, who would be taking care of me, etc. i got the letter for my funding in september 2014, talked to the surgeons office in novemeber or december 2014 and got my surgery in march 2015.

I'm in the US, so this may not help, but I set up a consult on April 27th and scheduled that day.  I have my pre-op appointment May 19th, and am scheduled for surgery for June 16th.  All 2016.  I definitely got lucky with scheduling though.  When I was looking into another surgeon, they were booked months and months in advance.  I had a consult in October and couldn't have surgery until late January, I think.

Depends on who you get referred to.

I take it you're trying to get in with Kneeshaw? He tends to insist on a referral from your GIC (not a GP), but you might be in luck if he's willing to accept written evidence that you've been diagnosed with GD; why not ring & ask his secretary? You'll also need to have been on T for at least 6 months.

Walls & Dabritz will accept a GP referral if you have an existing GIC diagnosis of GD.

If all of that is in order, then Mr Kneeshaw will see you within 18 weeks of receipt of your referral; Walls/Dabritz's waiting list is about 8 months from referral; Yelland's waiting list is now 9 months and rising.

In general, most of the male chest reconstruction surgeons won't accept GP referrals on the NHS; generally, they insist on the referral coming from a recognised GIC. Generally speaking, GPs can only refer you for breast reduction surgery which is not the same thing.

If Kneeshaw accepts your GP's referral, you'll need to phone his secretary as soon as you get the letter to organise your initial consultation.
