Title: Roller derby
Post by: ScarlettDreams on May 12, 2016, 08:33:28 AM
Has anyone else here tried roller derby? I just went to my third practice last night and it's honestly been amazing so far.

Hey Scarlett, that is so cool!  I used to see the Derby on TV and thought it was, like wrestling, fake and rehearsed.  Now I get to see girls and women like you dishing it out in person and this is truly an athletic contact sport.  Seeing so many young girls watching and participating is also encouraging as we don't all grow up to simply be pretty princesses who cannot break a fingernail  :D  The athleticism and team work involved is impressive even if I still don't get all the rules.  We also note the inclusive nature of this sport with Queer folks fully accepted and out there.

Roll on!

It's definitely athletic. I am having a blast learning and just so far extremely happy with the atmosphere.  I think everyone gets confused on the rules at first! :)

Hey Scarlett,
A cis friend of mine has been doing it for a number of years.  She loves it, and it sounds like they a quite trans-friendly.
Have fun,
Paige :)

Hi! I do roller derby, started playing in 2012 and am now skating as a referee. Amazing sport that has pretty much changed my life and very trans friendly. If someone is interested I'll link the gender policies for both Women's Flat Track Derby Association and Men's Roller Derby Association.

Welcome to Susan's, Scarlett! I used to roller-skate a lot when I was a teen. I picked up ice skating in my thirties. I've also done the roller blade thing. I've never tried derby though. It sounds like a blast.
