Title: Has anyone been able to get short term disability coverage?
Post by: Emjay on May 14, 2016, 06:01:28 PM
I'm going to call Monday to see if this is even possible but has anyone been able to claim short term disability benefits while recovering?   The only thing I can find in the books from my employer is that you can't file for cosmetic surgeries.......  but they do cover gcs so I'm thinking maybe it can be covered?

If I can get this it would greatly reduce my wait time saving enough cash to be out of work during recovery.

I know everyone's insurance policies are different but wanted to see if anyone ever has had success with this.

Thoughts?

My employer actually *insisted* that I have the paperwork for both short-term disability and FMLA on file before I had GRS; I didn't need it, and we expected that things would play out the way they did (I had plenty of paid sick time plus a ton of banked vacation days if it came to that), but they wanted every option covered.

I have to assume that they would've been OK with me claiming it, since it was their idea. :)  Good luck!!

Good to know and thanks!

When I first started talking with HR about coming out, they went through a lot of this stuff but I can't remember exactly what they said so I need to contact them again for an update.

I'm just now starting to plan so it's early, I just want to make sure I think of everything.

I get paid at 100% on STD by grossing it up with sick pay.  I also have 6 months sick per year sooooo.. Remember though FMLA only protects some of us for 3 months before you have to use banked vacation.  So odd...
