Title: Gender Therapist
Post by: Katiebelle on May 23, 2016, 09:04:25 PM
So the last time I tried to transition I went about it all wrong.

I was forcing myself through the experience as quickly as I could because I was afraid my body would go from boy to man in no time at all and I was afraid of the transition process as well. I was afraid of being at that in between point of being myself but not quite passing.

My whole family went on a secret vacation without me and they changed the locks. My wife left me. I was completely miserable and I was doing it without a therapist.

Fast forward 5 years.

In every serious relationship since then I've made sure to tell my partner that I was transgender. My new wife loves me for it. We've been out shopping together and she's helped me realize how true all of this still is because she doesn't see me any differently.

Today, I found out there's a therapist that specializes in these kinds of things and she's right down the street from us.

I'm going to do it right this time.

Hugs,
Katie

Congrats and good luck!
I've never started to transition before, but I struggled with a vicious cycle of denial and acceptance through my teens and early 20s. I finally accepted myself, and though I'd rather be in a better position to transition, that better position is off in some indefinite point in the future.
Here's to new beginnings!

I'm happy to hear you are doing better with it this time Katie. I specifically searched out a psychologist that specializes in gender dysphoria and she is great. I wish you all the luck and hope you have a great eperience this time

I've found that there is a difference between a for-real gender therapist and 'others'. Even then there is big difference between those who've "Walked the Walk" vs "Talk the talk". My TG support group has been and still is the best therapy I have received, especially the couple of special angels there for me when I needed them.

I was lucky in finding a psychologist who was both well published on trans issues and as a bonus was a trans man my age.  I felt pretty comfortable discussing uncomfortable things as I knew he would understand where others might not.
