Title: Transgender friendly communities/schools for adolescents
Post by: Elbasso on June 11, 2016, 09:56:24 AM
I am new to this support board.  I am a parent of an adolescent who recently came out as transgender (though we have suspected this for years).  We live in a community in Minnesota where there is a lot of intolerance for differences.  My child and I are discussing what to do about school, as the current school situation may be very unpleasant, and we may move.  I was wondering if anyone has suggestions for areas of Minnesota that would be more friendly toward transgender individuals, especially schools.  Thank you!

Welcome to Susan's Place. I have had no experience with the state but I would suggest you contact the school district and find out what their policies are toward transgender children. If a district is aware, they will have written guidelines that every school in the system needs to follow. The good thing is children are more accepting than adults though there is always the bully in the crowd. I wasn't out in school but I was a nerd and enough different that I still needed to deal with a few bullies. I also understand some of the difficulties your child might face because I transitioned so long ago that I faced some of the same issues as an adult. Feel free to ask any questions you have and we will do our best to answer them.

We issue to all new members the following links so you will best be able to use the web site.

Native of Minnesota but have not lived there since the early 90s. Still get to visit from time to time. It seems like many places in the Twin cities are very progressive, and maybe some of the closer suburbs like Richfield, Bloomington, Eden Prairie and Burnsville.

Are you in a rural are now?
