Title: Places to get testosterone like Mazzoni Center?
Post by: Austin Rodgers on June 11, 2016, 05:49:01 PM
I was wondering if there were any more LGBTQ friendly places like the Mazzoni Center? I love how they have the "informed consent" option with starting testosterone for transgender guys.

I am really looking to start t soon, but I wish it wasn't in Philly. If you know of another place like that let me know! Or if you have experience with the Mazzoni Center tell me about it, thanks  :)

If you mentioned where you are located or where you are willing/able to drive to, that may be helpful.

This list includes a bunch of informed consent clinics, but is not exhaustive:

Sorry I am living in Cullman, Alabama. But I am not sure where I will be able to drive because I am soon to be starting college. I am not sure where that will be, this may help me decide.

Chicago Howard Brown clinic. They take loads of insurance and give you good rates if you don't have it. T is relatively cheep in inject-able form and I believe they have access to needle exchange as well. It's expensive to live up here in the CHI area/IL alone lately geeze.. but there are loads of colleges. best of luck

Private doctors are allowed to follow informed consent if they choose. You may have luck calling local general practitioners and endocrinologists and asking if they offer HRT for transgender patients and whether or not they require a referral, and if so, from who.

I don't know of any near you but I've been going to Mazzoni for over 5 years now and have had a good experience. They provide my T, referred me to my hysto surgeon (who was great and worked with my insurance!), and now have a pharmacy next door that you can get your hormones from on the spot when you get your script (used to have to ship it from Oregon). They take insurance and have a really great sliding scale if you don't have insurance that will cover trans-related care. There's a medical office and a mental health/counseling office, both easily accessible by public transport (subway) in the city. They also run the Philadelphia Trans Health Conference, which is a national (if not international) conference that has tons of workshops on all topics related to transition and attracts trans people, surgeons, therapists, and all sorts of professionals from various fields who support trans people and their health, socially/medically/legally, etc. Plus vendors selling trans-related goods and such! PTHC is the first or second weekend in June every year and definitely worth going to if you're near Philly around then.
