Title: Interview Help
Post by: Elis on July 17, 2016, 10:24:19 AM
This post is more geared at ftms but all advice is appreciated. So I have an interview for the first time as my real self Tuesday (yay :) :) ) but not sure how to project myself. I know I pass but I look more like a 17yr old instead of the 22yr old I am; so how do I offset that initial awkwardness when I meet the interviewer? Plus it seems many guys are quite masculine and confident and have this self assured vibe; which i dont have. And I'm quite feminine which I have to learn how to hide. My therapist was saying how employess don't want someone cocksure and rather someone who looked nervous and not so in your face; but I still don't quite believe this is true. The interviewer emailed me and he seems quite laid back but I still feel I have to learn the 'bro code' to be accepted. So any advice from other ftms who had interviews? Or mtfs?

I know the basics of a successful interview and can pretend to be confident but want to make sure I come across as a normal guy.

Mirrored body language is probably the most effective thing you could do to make the interviewer think you are like them. Sit how he sits, angle yourself the same, keep your posture similar, use the same tone of voice, volume, etc.

You're probably going to be hyperfocused on making yourself appear less feminine, but unless the other person know that you're trans, that isn't something they'll be taking note of. If they do, they're probably more likely thinking that you're a young, feminine gay guy than a trans person.

I try my best to mirror the other person but wonder if it comes across as fake. And yeah; I know that's probably how i come across to most people but i don't want it to be. I just want to blend in  :P

It's most important to be yourself or you will come across as fake but think in your mind that you are both there to do the job of filling the position. You want to do your part but this is team work so you don't want to dominate either unless this is a high pressure sales job where domination is expected. One of the things the interviewer will be looking for is are you the type of person who will work well with others? Be that type of person to the interviewer.
