Title: SRS at PAI in Bangkok. Where to stay and other advice/tips?
Post by: Meera0810 on July 20, 2016, 07:55:45 AM
Hi, everyone :)

I have finally booked my surgery with Dr. Sutin at PAI in Bangkok for November. I am so soo excited! :D I have been waiting for this moment for so long, and it is finally here :D I am sure, everybody here understands that.

I am from India, and there's not much support for me here, and not many to talk to, who have had their surgeries done. So, I am posting here, hoping for some good advice from you awesome people. :D

1. Where to stay near PAI? I have got some suggestions from them, and they are willing to help with booking as well, but all of their options are mostly above 90 USD per night, which is a little too expensive for me. I want more like under 50 USD.

Anybody who had their surgery done at PAI or in Bangkok, in general, has any suggestions for putting up in Bangkok, please share?

2. What are some must take/advisable things that one is likely to ignore to bring with them, and is needed there? ( I just don't want that moment, and I am already making a list of things to take, like I said, super excited :D)

Anything else, I should know, about undergoing SRS, recovery, and staying in Bangkok? Please do share resources, if any.

Thank you so much for helping me out, in advance! ^_^

I havent had my SRS there yet, but I have went to Thailand.

I guess if you can, go a few daysearlier for a bit of tourism. Bangkok is amazing.

I stayed at the IBIS RIVERSIDE. I dont think its close to the clinic, but I found it very nice and not so expensive.

Can't do much of tourism. The surgery itself is taking such a heavy toll on the pockets :( But thank you for the suggestion about the Hotel. I am looking into it :)

I'm a PAI girl..and my srs was done by Dr Sutin...he was fantastic.  You will have 7 days in the hospital and by the end of the 7 days you will have had your bandages removed and also the catheder. You will have started walking easily and be able to pee and pooh on your own. The other 2 top surgeons do not have a hospital or if they do then it's not for a week. You will get such excellent care at Piyavate Hospital in a private room. I looked forward to my hair wash around 5 days after surgery ....it was just wonderful to feel normal.

I agree that airbnb is the lowest cost option. I would suggest that you choose a place close to the clinic. They will send a car to pick you up but Bangkok is notorious for major traffic jams and sitting on a donut is not very comfortable after surgery. There are many options in the area which has great restraunts and other services. Unlike Chett and Suporn, you are in the City in a young thai yuppie area and also full of foreigners ....Japanese, Indians , Westerners etc.

I had zero pain but please do read " my wonderful surgeries at PAI" post for additional info.

You will also be there when one of my friends from HK will be there. What is your dates and as the time gets closer I will make sure you meet.

BTW I live in Bangkok.

I did read your review, in fact, it was one of the best reviews available. Thank you so much for that <3

The place I have booked is about 5 km from the clinic. That is the best deal I could find.

My surgery is on 5th November. I will be in Bangkok until 19th. I would love to meet :)

I have a question: Would you say that while in the Hospital, it will be comfortable to accommodate two more people in the same private room? Because my parents are going to be accompanying me.

Will do. And as somebody else already said, PAI is indeed very comfortably located in Bangkok, and so I have been confirmed. :)

My room was large enoigh to accommodate 2 extra guest beds,  I suggest that you discuss this with Jessie, Preechas assistant. I believe there is a small charge.for this.

And as the time gets closer I will intro you to my friend.

I'm with PAI at this very moment and wish I'd picked up this thread sooner.

If you ask Bune for a list of their special rate hotels he will send you a list, some of which are well within your price range. There's one in particular that they use called the Salil Hotel on Thong lor 1 (not the other Salil). It's 5 minutes from the PAI clinic and it's an absolutely gorgeous boutique hotel: 4* very plush with a superb breakfast, swimming pool, lovely quiet side street. The staff are fabulous. The special PAI rate is around 1600 baht for a superior room but if you want a Premier room with balcony and view you can get it for 1900 or thereabouts a night = about $50 a night for a Premier room. That's a substantial discount. As well as being just 5 mins from PAI the Salil Hotel is also close to their Piyavate hospital (which is also superb). In addition to the fantastic breakfast there's a fridge/freezer and microwave in the room and with a Tops supermarket a few minutes walk away it's easy to get some food in if you don't fancy walking out after you're back from the hospital.

I've actually stayed in the Salil Hotel before and it's fabulous.

The fact that Thong lor is a plush area shouldn't put you off: that's a plus to be frank and you won't get a decent hotel anywhere in Bangkok for much under $50 a night so you might as well opt for one of the best boutique hotels in Thong Lor. Actually I've been coming to this city for 5 years now and lived here for a time and I don't think there's a better value hotel to be found. It is popular though: for good reasons.

As for Piyavate hospital itself, I was there most of yesterday and will update when I get back from my operation (that's tomorrow).

The hospital seems top range. Perhaps not quite as 7* as Bumrungrad but not far behind from what I saw yesterday and with a slightly cosier, more intimate, ambience.

Thanks, Richenda :)

I have already booked an apartment with Airbnb. It is 5 km from PAI, so that will be slightly inconvenient, but I hope it works out.

The problem with Hotel is that I am not coming for the surgery alone. I am 21, and my entire family wants to come with me to support me :D I am trying to take only 2 people with me, but for all I know, I might end up with 4 companions :P So, Apartment was a more reasonable thing, as it can adjust more people if needed, in the same costs.

Thank you, all :) I am so thankful every day for such a supportive family. They have had their difficult time dealing with it, but it does not deter them from caring for me.

Any advice on shopping and visiting beauty salons while in Bangkok? I don't have a very high budget, but I will still want to do a little bit of shopping and grooming ;-)

Thanks :)

Hi Meera,

The gorgeous Warlockmaker is the one to ask as she lives properly in Bangkok and speaks Thai too so she knows the people and the city. She'd be able to advise you on real Bangkok. As you will be at PAI you have places like Emporium and Terminal 21 very close by. I had my hair done out here by Chalachol who have around 14 salons in Bangkok and were brilliant. There's a branch near Pai on Sukhumvit Soi 55 although I went to Centrale Plaza because I used to live close to there.

If you have time off beforehand then I think Chatuchak Weekend Market is a great buzz. It's on the end of the Mo Chit SRS line. Probably not the place to go after the op though unless you're really feeling strong. The ferang backpackers all gravitate to the Khao San Road which isn't really close to anything and, personally, I wouldn't bother going back there.

But as I say, Warlockmaker is your girl for this.

with lots of love,

x

Here is a summary of where to go for deals and what to expect in prices:

1. Massages. Along Thonglor and near you apt there will be numerous places...these are clean but not fancy... 1 hour foot massage 250 to 300 baht , body massage Thai style 400 to 500 baht., oil massage 500 baht.
2. Pedicure manicure 400 baht. Color with normal 300baht.. color with gel or shallac 500 baht.
3. Hair .  Wash n blow-dry short hair 150 baht and long hair 200 baht

Shopping.. I suggest that you go to Platinum Mall...its the wholesale mall for buyers bit has mostly locals and tourist. Close to Central Grand off Sukumvit. Siam Center next to Paragon Mall. The big malls all have sales. I suggest Terminal 21, Central Grand and Emporium on the Sukumvit BTS line.
4. Taxis are very cheap and safe.. motorbikes are dangerous but used by locals and tourist. Traffic is a disaster and should go by the sky train BTS or MRT underground. If you are concerned about taxi and language then Uber is excellent.
5. Restraunts galore and all reasonable and safe ...streets side stall. .beware of msg. Average meals 100 baht per person.
Thais don't normally tip unless you become a frequent customer.

Anything else ..PM me

Thank you Richenda and Warlockmaker. These were very helpful comments. I have taken notes! :D

@ Warlockmaker: The costs do not seem to be all that high, so I think I can definitely get my hair and nails done while in Bangkok. :D As the time nears, I imagine I will have many questions about PAI and Bangkok. I will definitely let you know through PM, and I hope you wouldn't mind. Thank you so much for all the help :)
