Title: How do I start?
Post by: supergirl23 on July 25, 2016, 05:38:57 PM
Hey everyone,
So I am officially getting ready to start my transition! I'm going shopping tomorrow for an outfit I can wear to my therapist on Friday and then I am having my makeup done right before I leave for the therapist. The only thing I'm really worried about is my voice. I know I need to start, but I feel silly trying to train while people are home. I have been trying to sing along with Taylor Swift lately but I don't think that really helps. Will a vocal coach help? Or how do I go about starting on my voice.

I started by talking from my throat, rather than my diaphragm. The more I did this, the better I liked my voice. I have no idea what a therapist would say, nor what a voice specialist surgeon would say. I only know what worked for me.

First you will need to get over the embarrassment because at some point, you will need to use the voice in public. Part of the process is understanding that your voice will sound different to you that it will to others. A voice coach is one way to learn how to produce the proper voice if money isn't much of an issue. If you have had a singing background, it mostly a matter of using the head voice to speak in. I am also willing to work with people and am set up with Skype if you would like to receive help that way.

Once you understand the process and train your brain, it's not difficult to do but you are breaking the habits of years and replacing them with a new set of habits. This can take months to turn into a reflex action.
