Title: New Growth or re growth...How can you tell
Post by: LizK on July 27, 2016, 06:09:12 AM
I keep reading threads about Electrolysis and Laser treatments and people saying that the hairs "regrow" what I don't get is how you can tell. When you consider how many hair follicle cells there are on a male face I am curious how you can tell the difference between a regrowth and a new growth. This is not a trick question I would like to know.

How can you tell and if you can't tell then how do you know when you have "regrowth" as apposed to a dormant cell growing for the first time?

Sorry, can't help you... I have galvanic electrolysis and there is no regrowth after that!

Most often what's referred to as regrowth seems to encompass all hair that appears after an area has been cleared. However, true regrowth can only happen if the energy used was too low—meaning the hair follicle in question was only stunned and not killed. True regrowth does not happen when the energy used is appropriate to the follicles treated. Once a papilla is dead it remains dead.

True new growth can occur especially in young males due to the effects of testosterone. It can also sometimes be brought about by laser/intense pulsed light (IPL) treatment, particularly on male upper arms and torso. (Even so, the follicle probably did exist, but originally only sported a fine vellum hair.)

In the majority of cases both "new growth" and "regrowth" are just hairs growing from follicles that happened to be dormant at the time of the treatment.

Thanks for the replies ladies

I am making another post about Lazer V  IPL

Incidentally, I noticed that in another thread you post that you've seen some black hairs appear from a cleared, previously all white spot.

Some electrologists also say that hair growing from a previously cleared spot occasionally gain color. I myself have also seen previously white hair periphery to a cleared area grow darker. To paraphrase what I've read elsewhere, skin is evolutionarily well equipped to handle puncture wounds, and reacts to them with local histamine release induced inflammation that in turn increases circulation and collagen generation.

This sounds similar to the effect induced by skin-rejuvenation treatment with spiked "dermarollers" and their ilk. Since each individual trauma is so small the healing is practically three-dimensional and there is no scarring, but the skin does go into repair mode, and the emergency signals in a sense call previously dormant reserves into action.

I was trying to work out if it were even possible that the growth come back dark...it is how it appears to me, but I can't be certain. Hair growth is pretty darn complicated and I am not sure I have the patience to watch as closely as I should but I am certainly now getting a solid grasp on how the hair cycle all works. I have read a post from one other person saying they had noticed similar to me with a patch being cleared and any new growth was dark which makes sense if it is a dormant hair follicle that it could have a dark hair within it...

I'm going through electrolysis as well just now and am trying to figure out just how many hours I'll need. I've had IPL which has removed most of the dark hair but there's a lot of white hair remaining.

It looks like it will take 16 hours for first clearance but I'm not sure how much more work will need done after that in terms of hours.

If it helps I'm early 40's and am on effective AA so T levels are and will remain tiny.

Any ideas appreciated.
