I've short hair now, but I've considering to let it grow long. I thinks long hair looks awesome. Johnny Depp, Chris Hemsworth, Brad Pitt etc. looks cool and nice with long hair - they really pulls it off very good. So is it possible to pass with long hair and make it look masculine? Just wondered. I want some tips, so I would appreciate your tips! I can't share a picture of myself, because I'm not out yet and I doesn't want to be recognized. But I'm a bit round in my face.
Yeah; it's possible if you choose to keep it messy and go for an unkempt surfer guy type vibe. If you don't have a baby face that also helps. It's by far more important to be happy with how you look; I find these 'rules' you find on the internet for ftms can be equally harmful as helpful. This may help

I don't think the length of your hair matters as much as your face does in terms of passing. If you have a feminine face, you will probably need to choose a more stereotypically masculine haircut in order to pass.
I will say this: most guys outside of Hollywood with long hair keep it pretty stringy and unwashed looking compared to chicks. So while you could still pass if you have a square face (you notice that all of the men you listed with long hair have the ideal face for a man, hence their hotness), you would need to be sure not to mess with it as much as girls do, or to trim it in layers--all the guys I know with long hair have it all one length with little body to it.
Pretty much as long as you have been on T for any period of time, you can pass with longerhair. The facial features and voice are what sells it, so hair length tends to only be important if youre pre- T and want to give society the hint that youre expressing as male and passing as male, short hair is typical of males so combined with other aspects that tends to read male.

I don't know if this is any help coming from a guy who has always wanted to be a girl, but I have had long hair most of my adult life. I keep it clean, but until recently have never cut it. I mostly wear it in a pony tail. Never been mistaken for woman unless I'm intentionally presenting as female.

The hair dilemma isn't fun. It's passing VS doing what I want to try, but risking not passing.
I'm pre-everything and not out yet. It's not 100% guarantee to get T, since 80% TGs in Norway get medical treatment refused due strict rules. I thinks the time would be wasted if I wait "forever" in the waiting list and all that stuffs, where it's not guarantee. Perhaps I would give it a try, but cut it if I don't like it.
Unless you do a job in which long hair is against regulation I don't see why not.

Maybe the fear is a little bit irrational on my side, but I know for a fact that cis guys with long hair get misgendered too (sometimes) and I´m just not ready for it.
I think it helps a lot to have facial hair. Sadly mine is barely visible except when I dye it ;D Freaking blonde beard..

I never thought I'd want long hair again because of hassle and fear of being misgendered; but this post has made me reconsider. I'm still worried about being misgendered but I can't stop thinking about how I'll look with long hair; so wth ;D.

It really depends on your face... and various other factors. Yes, that may include the things you wear, the music you listen to and the people you hang out with. If you're lucky or unlucky (depending on how you see things), short hair may even make you pass less than long hair.
Well everyones brought up a good point. I myself will be keeping the hair long during transition. Going for the viking look with beads bones and all that in my hair. Long hair can be epically masculine. Just need viking accessories. At least I think I could pull it off considering my tattoos. But as alway do research and see what you like. The look isn't for everyone. And a body to match would go well with the image you would try to convey.
As someone with medium length hair I get a bit of confusion from folks but I think they tend to lean more to the "male". But I'm also on T where I passed all the time previously. If you got lucky with genetics maybe you could pass Pre-T with long hair but don't think it's likely.
Sure you can, just let it grow wild. No styling. Low ponytail or loose and free. Check out Joe from CBS/Survivor!!!
When mine was long and I was dressed male, I used the low ponytail; when dressed female, I used high or asymmetrical ponytail (or braids, pigtails, knot) usually with ribbons and bows.
And really, who gives a rat's elbow if you look like a girly boy or a boyish girl as long as YOU like it!

I've always thought guys with long hair were super hot so not surprisingly I always imagined myself as a guy with long hair, lol. It's short right now for the sake of passing, but since I don't pass anyway (I've only been on T for 4 1/2 months) I'm thinking of growing it out. At least I'll be happy even if I keep getting misgendered. Here's some cool advice from a transguy who at the time wasn't on T. He seems to pass pretty well.

I just wanted to add that it might depend on where you live. In Asia I had no problem having longer hair, but in the US I'm getting mixed reactions. Mostly male but sometimes I get ma'am. It doesn't bother me personally, but I know when I go down south I get a lot more ma'ams than sirs.

I'm a pre-hrt MTF, and my long hair doesn't get me gendered as female.(Even though it is gorgeous!) So I agree that just walking a little stiff, having facial hair, being muscular, wearing bro clothes can all reframe the way your long hair is perceived. I even wear bright colored hair clips, side pony...all sorts of cutesy stuff in my hair. Straight back plain looking hair would be considered masculine, even ignoring all other gender markers.
