Title: Feeling high?
Post by: WorkingOnThomas on August 20, 2016, 12:11:16 PM
So it's been exactly 48 hours since I started T - and I'm exhausted. I can hardly stay awake, and when I am awake, I feel - there really is no other word for it - 'high'. It isn't unpleasant, but it is making it hard to concentrate.

Is this normal? Does it go away?

No, that is not normal.  Feeling tired is normal for starting many drugs (especially things like anti-depressants or anti-anxiety meds, but it can happen with hormones too--though with me it was having a HARDER time sleeping not sleeping more), and I wouldn't be too worried if it was just tiredness--but you should not be feeling high.  I would contact my doctor and let them know then follow their suggestions.

This is, of course, dependent on whether we are talking the same kind of "high."  If you simply mean you're happy and feeling good when you were down before, then I wouldn't worry.  But I am referencing symptoms such as light-headedness, not being able to follow events at a normal pace, thinking too slow or too fast to the point that it affects your ability to do things, or having any of the feelings that you would get after drinking wine or some other alcoholic beverage in a low dosage.  If any of these things are happening, just call your doctor and let him know.  T shouldn't be affecting your ability to think normally.

I definitely experienced a high, but not sure if you should be taking my word for it, since I´m currently working with my GP and not an endocrinologist.

I can give you my experience - when I started on a low dose I felt extremely energized (kind of high) but then also tired because of all the energy (but only after a while, not during). Then when I upped to a higher dose at first I felt so tired I could barely move. It was unpleasant  though and I could not concentrate either.

If you feel otherwise okay (and not lightheaded or dizzy) I´d say it´s safe but couldn´t hurt to talk to the doc.

Edit to add: @FtMitch haha I just noticed we both have a rainbow ticker, your runner is definitely going faster at 9 months on T versus my snail 28 days  ;D Gonna catch that pot of gold at the end.

I would talk to your doctor. I think I felt a bit off kilter but nothing like being high. (Not that I have much personal experience outside of post surgery meds). A lot of people experience a bit of an energy shift in either direction but I've never heard of someone who had a doped up experience. If you're ability to focus or think is affected you should call your doctor.

Remember, no matter how small the issue, if you have questions or concerns about your meds, always call your doctor.

It isn't like being drunk - I can work. I'm actually getting more done, as it turns out. I just can't be bothered about some things. Stuff I was constantly worried about before just seems totally unimportant right now. I've only ever experienced this sensation after eating brownies. Or when in the first few days of taking a new anti-anxiety med, come to think of it. And that eventually always wears off. So I assume this is going to wear off as well.

I wouldn't have described it as a high. I think knowing that I was on T and making progress did give me a little mental and emotional pick-me-up, but I don't think that translated to any kind of increased alertness or inability to focus.

I would say give it another few days to see if it eases off. If I remember from the other thread, you're on Sustanon? That's a long-term release form of T, so that could explain the difference in experience that you're having than everyone else that has commented thus far. Now would be a good time for other European guys who aren't on gel to comment :)

If it isn't having a physical impact (not making you dizzy or lightheaded like November Fox mentioned) you're probably good to wait on calling the doctor. I'd keep a log of what you're experiencing and when, and if it hasn't let up in a week call the doctor. If it does go away, at least take your log in to your next appointment and talk to them about it.

I did experience some mild euphoria when I started T although it might have been psychological (woo hoo, just started T) rather than caused by the T itself. I wouldn't have compared it to hypomania from an SSRI, which definitely felt dramatic and chemical (and went away all too soon).

T will change your energy levels (eating and sleeping patterns) and maybe for you it is hitting quickly.

I do have more drive to do things now but it is a subtle change.
