Title: My First Haircut
Post by: Deborah on September 06, 2016, 09:25:58 AM
I got my first haircut yesterday after letting my hair grow untouched for 20 months.  Actually I only got the ends trimmed because they had become a frizzy mess.

It was a unisex place and despite pretty much being in male mode was addressed as ma'am when the barber called me.  Unfortunately that only lasted until I spoke LOL.  The barber, a lady, did address me as honey or baby the whole time she was trimming my hair.  I wonder if she addresses everyone like that?

Anyway, it was a pleasant experience and my hair condition is much improved.  :-).   It's about two inches below my shoulders in the back and shoulder length on the sides now.

that's what I want to do. Get the edges cut , but I'm thinking of trying a different hair color too. Something like maroon or some bright color for fun.

I dyed mine the day before.  I left it in too long and it came out a shade darker than expected.

I am 5'6" but unfortunately my hair was only 5'5" so I'm follicly challenged. LOL  I'm leaving in about 5 minutes for a wig shop in Atlanta that carries nice wigs and is trans friendly.  At least they said they were when I talked to them on the phone Friday.  I'll post a review later.

I get mine cut about every 8 weeks to keep the ends from getting bad. My stylist addresses me as m'lady. :) Cute

I think this is one of the funniest and best ways to put it. I just want you to know that if T eventually renders me challenged hair-wise, I'm stealing this and using it.

I once went over 2 years without a hair cut, when I started hrt. To be fair my hair was already long for man when I started hrt.. When I went for the cut, the bottom on my hair touched my bum.

Its not pleasant to have such long hair, I often got headaches from the weight of my hair and drying it was very long process.

Now I maintain my hair around 2 to 3 inch below my shoulders. I also put blonde streaks in my hair. I have kinda played with the idea of going blonde.. (they say blondes have all the fun).. but I love my brown hair.

As of current, I hate haircuts. It was a little more manageable when I had this exquisite stylist, who had made sure my experience was amazing as well as everyone in the salon made an awesome atmosphere. But my heart dropped when I heard the news that my stylist had up and left, and well anyone else who was able to do the same had gone too.
The military has me literally on a double edged sword here with regulation as well as that I am legal to be myself (except regulation on hair has to remain in male lockdown).
So for the past two months I had to go down to a quick cheap salon to get my haircut, and well, they just do not understand. They have gone and basically made it so that it is obviously male style cut rather than a more androgynous style I can get away with for the military with my other stylist.
Oh well, such is life I suppose for myself and living on a fine line of having the literal double life so to speak. On the other hand, I will have a regular stylist starting next month so as to hopefully be able to work with my hair on a better level.

Ah, you've got a "Lob" now, Deborah-- very fashionable. Cutting that much hair at once removes damaged ends and usually leaves the remaining hair looking very good. The best my hair ever looked was right after cutting several inches at once. Jennifer Aniston's stylist insist on cutting Jen's back to a bob or lob every few years as routine maintenance. It seems to work great for her.

About 2 weeks ago, I also went to a hair salon the first time in 2 years while travelling for a business meeting in the mainland.

Yes. The hair dressers are mostly young women, and they like to chat with their customers on any subjects. On that day, the hair dresser was a cute, but very tall young girl. She asked me whether I live there and other stuffs. She recommended me a hair style called 'C-curl' here (you may google it). It took 3 hours and I could fly to my home on time.

I look very masculine when exposing my M line in the forehead, but she did not care about it. As she sometimes touched my body, I assumed she recognized me as a woman (women tend to avoid any body touch if they recognize me as a man).

I paid ca. US$ 210 on that day. BTW, my wife usually pays less than US$ 80 for her hair care  ;D

When I transitioned I was insistant on growing my hair as long as I possibly could. I too got it to just touch the top of my bum. But as you say, it's not nice to care for such long hair, and my hair was quite thin, and didn't like being made to be so long. So over the past 10 years I've slowly been getting it cut shorter and shorter.

I love to colour my hair, and also to change the colours every now and then. It's naturally boring brown (my Brother got my Mom's lovely platinum blonde hair, I got my Dad's crummy brown hair), so I always go for various shades of red. In fact I've been colouring it with a tint of red for so long, that most folks just assume I'm a readhead (Auburn, more accurately, just like my Nan was). I used to have coloured panels underneath, say much darker or lighter, that only showed through when the hair moved. That was all the rage about 8 years ago.
For a long while it was about 2" below my shoulders, then for the past few years I kept it just touching my shoulders.
Last Saturday I went and had the shortest cut I've ever had as a female, it's just below my ears, about in line with my mouth. I'm not sure at all about it, but my boyfriend loves it. He says I should always have it that short. It is much easier to care for, and also being shorter, it's much lighter in weight, and so gives the impression of much more body and volume. The lack of hair on the sides/temples is much less apparent and easier to hide.
I'm getting used to it, slowly.
I'm going to see how long it takes to grow back until it touches my shoulders again, and then decide if I'll get it cut this short again. I must admit I'm more confident when out on a windy day, with this new short bob style. I can't decide if it makes me look younger or older...

I don't think I'll ever go blonde though.

What really amazed me during my latest salon visit was whilst I was chatting to my stylist, and we were talking about sleeping (no idea how the conversation got there) and I mentioned that I had been having trouble sleeping because I kept waking up very hot, and dripping with sweat, I've had night sweats for a few nights in the past couple of weeks. And she said, "Oh no, I hope it's not, you know, that time". I suddenly twigged she was talking about the menopause!  :o
I managed to remain calm and said that I hoped it wasn't, because I wasn't that old yet!
What made it amazing to me is that I was sat with my hair all wet, combed back, revealing a very masculine, and rather receded hairline, with me lying with my head back in the bowl so she could wash the hair, with my Adam's Apple sticking up as high as it possibly could be. And I was thinking, surely, everyone in the salon has twigged me by now. And then I get asked if I'm going through the menopause!
So yeah, that was a surprise.

I like your "C-curl", Barbie. I just researched it and see it's a way of using a permanent wave to achieve a flipped (in or out) bottom. It must save time in the morning.

Unlike V, I can't wait to be blonde or at least partially so. But that's a story for another day. I decided after a few online makeovers that I would look much better blonde. I'd never really realized it before.

Yes. You can try the blonde, and it will look great.

I also once tried to be brown, but the hair dresser said I need to bleach my hair before dying in brown as my hair is already dyed in black. I gave up it as bleaching will damage my hair severely.

Yellow hair is popular among some young women here.

Heh, wildly off topic, but this was something my therapist was pointing out to me yesterday.

We know what our 'tells' are, because we see them in the mirror every day, and they are part of our dysphoria, our discomfort with ourselves and what we see as an issue in fitting into our preferred presentation and role.

Other people, not so much.  She pointed out to me that others our there are just trying to do their jobs, or get somewhere, or manage to get across the street without tripping over someone else.  They're not playing 'Spot the Transperson', and not examining everyone to see if they're Cis or Trans.  Unless something is really 'off' in our presentation that calls attention to ourselves, such as highly unusual or inappropriate clothing, really unusual hair or makeup, or unusual behavior, we're just another person.

Yes, I know what you mean, and it must be true because of what I experienced the other day. But then there are those times when we think we are doing well, and don't think that there is something highly unusual or inappropriate in our appearance or behaviour, yet we get clocked.
I can't figure it out at all.
