Title: Request for help with a journalism project
Post by: NYC Writer on October 29, 2007, 10:39:52 PM
We are two graduate students at the Columbia University School of Journalism and we are working on a multimedia journalism project about transgendered people in the workplace. We want to understand and describe in a personal way what it's like to be a transgendered employee, including obstacles such as discrimination. We feel that this project is timely, because of the fight to include gender identity and expression in the the Employment Non-Discrimination Act. We want to tell the stories of real people whom this legislation will affect.

We are looking for people in New York City who want to share their stories. This project is primarily for school, but it will be online and available to readers and will likely include video, audio and photographs. With that in mind, we need people who are comfortable sharing their real names, faces and stories with us and with our readers.

We understand that this is a very personal subject and we are committed to telling the story fairly and accurately. We hope that our project can help foster greater understanding of the challenges that transgendered people face as they navigate life in the workplace.

Please post here or send a private message. Thanks!

Hi Keira, thanks for your kind words. NYC is actually pretty trans-friendly-- we were actually referring to a fight over the Federal Non-Discrimination Act in Congress.

We're not trans ourselves, but a friend is (though journalistic ethics won't let us write about people close to us). I actually found this site through TS Roadmap, and it does seem to be a great resource.

Anyway, if you know anyone in New York who might be interested, do pass along our message.

Thanks!  :)
