Title: Stereotypical hobbies/things of your birth gender you love
Post by: Nero on October 30, 2007, 09:40:43 AM
Good morning guys and dolls.

Are there any hobbies/activities/things stereotypical of your birth gender you love and refuse to give up?

I love dolls. I still have every doll from my childhood - Russian dolls, handmade dolls, baby dolls, Cabbage Patch, Strawberry Shortcake (huge collection), Barbie, My Little Pony, American Girl, and various other dolls. All very old and in a plethora of conditions ranging from 'never removed from box' to 'decapitated or otherwise dismembered'.
I have my stuffed animals too.

I like to draw or create beautiful things.

I like some girly computer games.

I admit it - I LOVE pretty things.

I like to wear men's clothes from time to time.

I like to build things in my shop.  By the way, this is something that I picked up after my transition... the shop that is.  I became interested in woodworking after I met some other women in the bay area that did woodworking.  So it ain't just for men anymore!

I drive a truck.  Again, this is something new.  I always drove a more "feminine" car.  But since I moved to the boonies, trucks make more sense out here with all the stuff I have to haul around.

I tend to have more masculine taste in furnishings for my home.

I'm a tech weenie.  I love new technology.

I'm really into astronomy.  There are few women in astronomy.

I love science, history, and botany.  I don't know where these things fall these days.  I don't think that they are gender specific.  I do believe that not too many people have interest in these areas of either gender.

I like more masculine type cars in dark colours (black or green) and probably always will.

I like the home furnished more in a masculine style as well (not dark or drab colours but just minimalistic) - no frilly things lol

I don't wear skirts or dresses, probably never will either. Tried them though, but its not me.  I wear women's jeans, shorts, trackies, tops, hoodies, tees etc.  I like the feminine sporty look.

I like racing and shooting games (if you can call them masculine)

Besides working with the techie side of computers (programming, fixing, etc.. I work in IT), I guess the only thing considered to be a male pastime, rather than female, is 4WDing.  I love getting out in the Australian bush and driving in sand dunes at the beach, with my partner in our Suzy (Suzuki Jimny), she is black, and she has pink bits  :)

Oh, yeah, and I do general maintence to our Suzy, oil change, filters etc, although I can do much more difficult things, eg design and install suspension lifts, etc, now days I stay away from major work (I do not want to break a nail afterall), and just do the easy things, which saves me a lot of money.

My only other hobbie is weather photography, esp lightning, but I think that is more of a gender neutral pastime.

I was always the better cook in the house so I still enjoy cooking for my Soulmate and Lifepartner.

I also enjoy a good meal, possibly more than I should at times.

I was an electronics technician back when there were vacuum tubes in two-way radios and I never lost my interest in techie stuff.  I might take the test for a ham radio li8cense and work 2-meter FM on voice and learn Morse code so I can work on frequencies below 12 meters.

Other than that it has all gone into the past, tools and all.  I change the oil on the Jeep by driving it into Jiffy Lube.  I clean the inside and wax the outside by calling the detail shop.

Drawing cartoons is something that I usually thought of as a male hobby (although there are some female cartoonists, like Cathy Guisewite and Lynn Johnston, to name a couple).  I always loved cartoons and comic strips (I still have an attachment to a few of them, especially Peanuts), so I eventually started drawing my own.

Hi all, well for #1 I use to have a boat like yours Kiera, I named it the PAMALA must of crewsed most of the Georgian Bay with it. If I could own one again? Yessss I would love to. As for the vehicle My soul mate and I drive is a  Jeep Cherokee, well she does most of the driving, don't like driving in a city I don't know my way around yet.

I use to love doing wood work and I did at one time have all the tools that one would want to do wood work with. To much moving about took care of most any tools I had. Same as for decorating up the apartment I would love to but I have kind of lost interest in doing so after all the moving to often. Well maybe I may get the urge again. In one place I lived at for nearly ten years I had it really decorated nice and plants everywhere,  it looked like a jungle in the living-room. I had the lacy curtains, oil paintings I had done myself and the whole 9 yards.

I do North American Native crafts as well.  I love collecting different fantasy stuff on the internet, I use to write children's fantasy stories. And my, can't forget colors, I love colors and have many colorful pictures in my hard drive that I have collected as well. Dolls, oh yes, I got a whole collection of them , as well as fairies.

Almost forgot back in my early twenties I use to fly pontoon bush planes  doing charter for tourist over waterways which were about the only landing facilities  there were to the many islands on the Georgian Bay.

Erm,
I suppose a lot of the music I prefer tends to have male fans, Beefheart and Zappa and that.
I've always been quite keen on Star Wars and Bond.
When I was a child I played mainly with handpuppets, they used to play a lot in my sisters' toy kitchen and with her iron and stuff.
I had a pirate ship made from playmobil.
I play computer games but everybody beats me 'cos I can't control the character - i tend to go towards simple games for that reason.
There's nothing particularly stamped with gender I don't think, in either direction. Makes me sound so Beige.

I too was always fascinated with flying..... and then one day I donned a set of wings and learned to fly.  I did it.  I flew with a hawk.  It was magic Tink.  I did it as ME, long after my transition.  I had finally broken all of life's bonds and realized all of my childhood desires. It was an amazing thing.  That is when my life finally began.

My passion in life is playing music, always has been regardless of my gender. It goes way beyond being a hobby, it's as integral as eating. I think being able to immerse in music has literally saved my life during the hard times. Other than that I love to read. And also to write. These aren't really gendered activities.

oh me too! I remember the time I got stuck in my favorite tree. I tried to climb to the very top, went too high, and panicked. My friends had to find the nearest adult to help get me down. It was soooo embarassing. It's funny now, though.

Hmmm, there really isn't anything much. I hate to sound all "I'm so female because I don't do male things" justifying, but I'm sitting here pondering it and not coming up with anything.

In fact, it's one of the things my wife complains about. She even mentioned it last night to my therapist... that before transitioning, I was something of a hyrid, being interested in male-ish things AND female-ish things. But now, she says, I'm JUST Kate. No one else.

I think it's because I wasn't so much into male THINGS before, but I tried to find a feminine expression within a male social context. Like I loved cars, but I loved DRIVING them. The feel, the dance... not the power and noise. But now that I'm in a female context, I don't have to try and carve out a feminine niche within male pursuits anymore. It all came together into a whole, congruent life now.

I still like doing most of the things I did before beginning transitioning; I still like to go mudding Jeep TJ in my (3" lift with 35" wheels), I love my Mustang GT & of course there is hunting and fishing.  My wife loves to go fishing but does not want to try going hunting with me at all but I can always get one of my sisters to go with me.
I have become even fonder of cooking since beginning transition; I've always enjoyed it but lately I have real enjoyed trying new things in the kitchen and as long as my wife enjoy eating what I try that even better.

Tink, did you ever follow your dream and actually learn to fly? There are many Commercial Lady Pilots these days and the web based virtual simulations are about as good as it's ever going to get. Start with Microsoft FS 2004, a boom style talk headset (the only 2 things you have to buy), download & install <a href="http://www.squawkbox.ca/doc/start/introduction.php">SquawkBox 3</a> and then register with <a href="http://vatsim.net/">VATSIM</a> to connect up with a real time, multiuser ATC flight communications system that truly puts you . . . achm, in a highly stressful pilots seat!

I'm positively afraid to even talk on the thing the flying is that real! My father, who was a pilot for 45 years, just laughs watching me (what do I say next?) and goes into bored mode immediately but is otherwise quite impressed with the realism and true to life procedures.

*sigh* The <a href="http://www.panamva.com/">YouTube music</a> is killing me (if not working open in new window) :embarrassed:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3nClYU7ksvw

If ya really want to get fancy you can <a href="http://www.panamva.com/main.php">"ENTER PANAMVA"</a> and, get this, apply for a postion! The flight scenes are actual simulations and the Boeing 314 flying boat has always been a favorite of mine. My father started with Pan American in 1955 and I in 83 (on the same date no less of 18Aug!) so I guess you could say the adventure & romance of flying has been in my blood since day 1 and while I never actually wanted to be a pilot I very much miss the unique culture that only a now defunct Pan American could ever foster . . .

We were paid quite less than the others but nobody seemed to care and the emotions nowadays still run very high!

Who can say
where the road goes
where the day flows
only time
And who can say
if your love grows
as your heart chose
only time
Who can say
why your heart sighs
as your love flies
only time
And who can say
why your heart cries
when your love lies
only time

Talk About Boy Toys I still have dreams I'm flying on PanAm :icon_bunch:

(oh yea! I forgot about my 8 yr old's "Saitek X52" flight control system!)

Kiera, thank you so much for the links & the Youtube video :).   No, unfortunately I never pursued my "flying" dream.  I'd love to learn how to fly a small airplane at least but I am not sure where to go.  Speaking of Pan American, I have three toy planes from them.  My grandpa gave them to me, and I don't know where he got them from.  When I was little, my grandpa and I would go to the airport every Saturday; we'd spend hours there watching the planes take off and land.  I'd talk to the pilots, keep notes of the arrivals, departures, and destinations.  My grandpa was a Saint.  He was so patient; when he passed, I felt so alone.  I never had the chance to thank him for everything he did for me, but I know that someday I will see him again. :)  Anyway....

I always loved flying, especially bush planes where one can go everywhere over hundreds of hectares of forests dotted by small lakes.  I Just simply can't afford to rent a plane now. Back in my early twenties I flew on the side to make extra money. I also flew the four engine Sea Otter when there were forest fires in the area.

Why certainly, Valentina, why not?

Before transition we had certain hobbies that we loved to do. Why would transitioning as a girl make any difference unless you loose interest in some hobbies? The biggest personal change will be attitude and personality as well as how you think and feel about certain things. There are probably some girl things that one may enjoy doing as well.

So what is the difference if you wish to build or race racing cars? Or how about building a house? A lot of women do that for a living as well now a days. Danica Patrick comes to mind.  You can find her pic on Google Images.

Things have changed much for women in the work force in the past three decades, some things good, some not. There are girls I have known who wished that stay-at- home moms positions were still in existence.

At one time women would not have been allowed to do certain work, work that was designated for men only. Now women can take up employment where ever they can get it, sometimes any type of work, even some risky type of work that men won't even do.  One of my web friends is a retired ironworker, as much a woman as any other female.

I am very much into technology. I like video games, but I'm pretty sure now that I just love them for the atmosphere, story, art, and humour. Monkey Island, Katamari, Shadow of the Colossus..  I also have an appreciation for the better graphics of FPS' and other gory games, but that's only because I want virtual reality.

I heavily enjoy fixing and building things and would like to someday craft my own instruments. I can fix anything outside of cars. Cars are dirty.

I'm also a beer enthusiast. Mmm.

One thing I just cant give up is beach fishing.
I find sitting alone on a rock in the middle of nowhere with just the waves and stars for company a perfect relaxing experience. No annoying people, no phone calls, no nothing, just nature at its finest.
I don't care if I dont catch anything....thats not my reason for doing it. Its the perfect solitude I enjoy. It helps me to get my thoughts in to prospective without any distractions.
The best part for me is watching the sky turn a deep blue before the sun comes up. For me its a magical experience that I cant do without.

I never had any stereotypical male hobbies.  Once I tried getting into car repair.  My car repairs cost me well over $1000 to fix at the dealer and my car never ran right again.  So, I pretty much sucked at that.  My only two hobbies now are my aquarium and running.

Music,

I can successfully repair cars, even modern ones.. but this was due to pressure all my life to work with Dad and well you end up learning what you dont.. and wanting to fit in.

I am also very good with woodwork tools as well, i like this atm somewhat but not my drive.

Me its music, games and i soo want to get into gardening.. for years i made a thing about it, when i actually never minded it.

All I can think of is I still enjoy shopping and fashion.

Ballet- it's stereotypically feminine but most people don't know that for a few centuries only men could dance ballet. Women weren't allowed until much later. I don't dance, just watch.

I also have a collection of decorative eggs I think that might be kind of feminine some of them are very feminine looking. They were all souvenirs I picked up at gift shops or gifts that people gave me and are unique.

I'm not really sure... drama? That's something guys do as well so I guess not stereotypical.

I could say arts related things like sculpting/metal crafting but they are no longer hobbies but my profession... and again, guys do them too.

Cooking? Yeah, I like to cook my own stuff and I like it to taste decent. 90% of the guys I know will avoid bothering or can't cook for crap. And it's so easy. I wouldn't say I love it or that it's a hobby, but it's pretty satisfying. Or maybe I'm just a picky eater.

Drawing cartoony cute animals is probably seen as girly by some people

I also like cute cartoons and animation in general

I also am a bit of a romantic and in my younger years liked reading novels, watching tv shows, movies, or writing fanfiction with a bit of romantic flair...this is pretty cringey to me now because its just so girly. Ive never been as adamant on romance as the stereotypical girl seemed to be, though. Mainly it was a teenager phase.

I like pink as a color, and generally  will like feminine or cutesy designs

Cooking - I really enjoy cooking, obviously anyone of any gender can cook but people often see it traditionally as a "female" thing.

Sandra Bullock - I really like Sandra Bullock movies and the kind of cheesy comedies she does.

Washing dishes - I often enjoy washing dishes and find it kind of cathartic

Never really thought about my hobbies as a gender thing. My hobbies, past and present, I keep(well, kept aquariums),  I fish, do car repair, cook, garden, wood work (mainly cut outs of flowers and butterflies that I paint with my daughters to hang on the privacy fence), tried painting, I crotchet (about to start a blanket for my youngest daughter). I like trying artsy craft type things, but I'm not good, I just like trying them out. Except for my Winter Centerpiece, that's good enough strangers have offered me money for. I like reading and playing games. Might try stained glass soon, but I hear that is a pane.  ::)

I also have a collection of decorative eggs I think that might be kind of feminine some of them are very feminine looking. They were all souvenirs I picked up at gift shops or gifts that people gave me and are unique.

A friend of the family has a Faberge Egg. I saw it when I was 10 or so, about 35 years ago. It was beautiful. I wish I knew what happened to it.

Always wanted a Barbie pink Dodge Dart/Demon or Plymouth Duster. Also the 70 Superbee (one of the few fans).

I had a 72 Dodge Dart Demon 340. Orange w/black top. Best console going. Take my word for it. Used to cruise Whittier Blvd. My first wife loved it. It was fast, it was cool, it was also a lemon. Dented intake manifold kept ruining the engine. Had the engine rebuilt 3 times before finding out and getting rid of it in 77.

Had a red 68 340 Dart which was a real tyre burner. Mopar build quality was unfortunately good one/bad one for many years. My friend had a 68 Roadrunner which was terminally rusty at just 6 years old

Luv the great outdoors.

I hunt, fish, and backcountry camp solo. This past year saw me solo into the deep woods for 4-5 days at a time...14 trips last year alone.sure, had two encounters with a black bear, but that doesn't stop me.
My hunting and fishing was something my dad and I did when I was young. I only took up those interests last year.

I'm an amateur ham, too!  But, so is my Mom. :)  She is the VP of our ham club.

I do a lot of stereotypical masculine things.  A LOT.  But, we live in the country and just fix stuff ourselves.  HVAC, Septic Tanks/pumps, Tractor repair, Bush Hog repair, car repair, remodeling, etc.  It is just my wife, myself and our 17 year old daughter, so we cross the gender roles often.  My wife and I will usually dub it "Two Girls Plumbing" or "Two Girls Farm Repair", or something like that.

I am an IT girl by trade.  I have done whitehat hacking, I do digital forensics and security auditing, and there are mostly men that I work with.  Once in a while a woman.  But I love that work!

I bake, cook, craft, am the primary housekeeper, grow a large garden every year, rarely dress in masculine clothes (even when hunting), and cry at touching commercials. lol  That is stereotypical girl stuff!

I think the lone hold out "Stereotypical hobbies/things of your birth gender you love" that I will not give up is sex with my wife.  :eusa_dance:

funny enough, you would NEVER have heard "girl me" say this, but i love the color pink, pastels, makeup/nail art, shiny/glittery things, and pop music.  i probably refused them so hard because i was the one being expected to wear the makeup and, much as i enjoy how it looks, it's something i prefer to look at on other people (good news for me).
i also love baking and cake decorating, which is more neutral (also good news for me i guess).

Still love working on the house, also doing a few LV (Low Voltage) jobs on the side. All kind of building / constructing / fixing. I do prefer electrical and carpentry over most of the other things.

Don't like fixing cars much but I still do it before paying $$$ to have a headlight replaced.

Add to that all kind of technology: Computers, networking IT security, home automation.

Now for the new discovered likes: Shopping (especially shoes), makeup and I have doe a fair amount of crafty stuff. I just add new things. Somehow I do not want to give up on all the fun. And hey - who says girls shouldn't touch  welder :-)

I am a qualified Arborist and I love climbing trees still, still love my photography ( excuse the fuzzy pic below  :D.  I am a sucker for a classic car, none of this silly electronic ignition or ECU's, love motorbikes and would love another.  My best friend got me into drag racing and am currently building my own car  >:-)

Oh boy where to start?

I love machines and always have.  I joke that they're the only thing that ever really understood me.  I've always been very mechanically inclined, and I can visualize how things work.
I love to build things.  I like to tinker with things, gunsmithing is one thing I've always kind of enjoyed.

But the biggest one that will probably cause the most issues for me is my love of competitive shooting. (USPSA and 3gun)  Not exactly the most inclusive circle when it comes to trans folk, though women are quite warmly welcomed.  So that's on the back burner now while I deal with this.  Will I return to it?  Perhaps, but time will tell.

I guess the most guy thing that brings me satisfaction is "long" range shooting with a .22 rifle.  I love shooting little plastic toys at about 100-150 meters.  Dinosaurs, little green army men, whatever I find cheap at the store.  It's more interesting than paper, easy to clean up, and quite a challenge.  When I'm on the gun, focusing on the target and about to break the shot nothing else in the universe matters, no social anxiety, no fears, nothing but mental silence and calm.  It's a very zen moment for me and one of the few places where I could escape, even if just for a moment, the mental turmoil that has consumed me for so long.

Real Housewives. Desperate Housewives. Bridget Jones. Those sorta feminine shows/books/etc

I was a tomboy. I never did any girlish stuff. I played war, Karate Kid, Rambo, played soccer, hockey.

My granny wanted to buy me a dollhouse when I was 5. My mom said "DON'T". She did anyway. I used it as a garage for my toy cars. Never owned a doll. Well I lied. I had action figures from Star Wars.

That awkward point where I say. "None." I mean, video games and stuff like "Magic: the Gathering" have always been labeled as "boys things" but I don't agree. They are open to anyone who wants to play. Besides that, all I do is read/write and cook/eat. Pretty neutral. I've failed as a man...and I'm OK with that.

I've heard of art and a love of animals being kinda feminine...? It's stupid, but those are two things I like a lot. I'm definitely a cat person. c:
I guess I was never really into "girly" kinda stuff? I used to play with a doll's house in nursery but never with the dolls, my mum said I'd find bugs outside and put them in the doll's house

Watching formula 1, football, rugby (especially when Scotland actually win!), whisky and tech are probably all stereotypically male. Running and cycling I guess are gender neutral.

Lots of hobbies I'm looking forward to on the other side - cooking, beauty therapy, swimming (I struggle with floating, hoping boobies will help!) and lots and lots of cocktails :D

Saying all of that, travelling will always be my first love when it comes to hobbies and I don't see that changing :)

Did anyone lose interest in a lot of their hobbies once they began transition? I did and it scared me a bit. I use to study apps and software incessantly and now it is just part of what i do to make money, there is no real hobby interest there. I collected model trains and have a big collection, since then i have barely touched it or picked up a periodical.

I still love sports and mountaineering though and the rest of my free time seems to be about exercise and fashion.

Robyn, when people start to work for a living in what used to be a hobby, they often lose interest in it as a hobby.  It's no longer a recreational activity, as it becomes a way to earn a living.  We generally need a different activity for recreation than we do for work.

Often other hobbies fall by the wayside as new activities enter our lives, both as work and mon-work activities.  Transition acts as another activity, taking the place of hobby stuff.  I find I'm not tinkering with electronics as much, and am more involved in social activities now that I am no longer a hermit.  :)
