Title: Spirolactone strange side effect?
Post by: RayaL on September 22, 2016, 07:14:39 AM
Hi, I recently began my HRT (just over a week) and the t blocker I'm using is spiro. I seem to notice whenever I take it for around 20 minutes after swallowing the pill my throat has a slight burning sensation and makes me want to burp and I can taste the medication in my throat. I've looked online and can't see anyone really saying the same thing and was wondering if this has happened to anyone else? I'm thinking maybe I'm not taking it with enough water?

When I was on it there was an after taste and it is quite a large pill so can get caught as you swallow. Try lots of water and taking it with food may help. In general pills on an empty tummy can cause reflux and nausea so taking them with or after food can help unless the instructions are contrary to that.

I usually take my Spiro at meal times. If you leave it in your mouth too long you will know. It is very bitter.
Milk can help too.

It's literally a bitter pill (although the last batch I got from Kaiser have a mint taste!).  Take it with food, something solid, to avoid the heartburn.  I generally take my morning pill with my oatmeal, and my evening pill with dessert or an evening snack (on the diet plan, of course... :) ).

I was to understand that its efficacy is much better if taken with food. If you do that, the bonus is you want get acid re flux.

I'm not on spiro anymore, but I did find I had to throw it back quickly with a big gulp of water or else I got that bitter after taste - which definitely isn't subtle.

Smelly urine other than you are used to. My 5 year and 10 month usage was stopped this past week to give my body a rest. My sodium was below normal range a couple of times and my doctor halved the dosage. I noticed this week after off of Spiro that there is no metallic taste in my mouth.

I've been on it for nearly 25 years. I have only noticed a bit of a minty taste. I believe they add  it because it may be a little harsh on your stomach.

Make sure to take it with enough food! If I forget I either end up with bad heartburn or upset stomach.

20 years ago, I was taking ones that were sort of a brown color and they tasted most foul.  Used to actually dread taking them.

This time, they are coated and taste minty.  WAY better.
