Title: Finasteride Overdoing It?
Post by: ainawa88 on September 28, 2016, 06:52:38 AM
I'm curious about going on finasteride purely because I've read about other girls being on it ... In all honesty I probably don't need it, but if it would help me even a teenth, I want it.

That being said, I am already on cyproterone, estradiol and progesterone. Would adding a fourth drug to my regimen be too much?

... And of course, I will ask my doctor (nothing gets done without being run by them). I'd just like to hear the experiences/opinions here. :)

Finasteride isn't worth it if you already have your hair, and your testosterone is controlled. I would assume that it is as cypro and progesterone are going to probably floor you anyway.

Finasteride is just a type 1 DHT blocker. You'd have to have some fairly decent testosterone before you have to worry about DHT.  I would say no, it's expensive and mostly unnecessary.

I'm on both finasteride and spiro, along with estradiol patches.  The finasteride was started 6 years ago for a problem with an enlarged prostate, but I found it had other... advantages. ;)

My urologist says I can discontinue the finasteride in about a year, once my body gives up on trying to make much testosterone. There are apparently pathways in some lower abdominal tissues like the prostate gland that synthesize testosterone and immediately reduce it to DHT, which the finasteride will continue to block.

Alas, I had already lost too much hair for finasteride to work its magic on my scalp, and even with Estrodiol I'm not gaining much back.  Not enough up there for a good transplant result, so my hair comes in a box these days.

Finasteride is just a type 1 DHT blocker.

Type 2 alpha reductase inhibitor only, which converts T to DHT. Dutasteride inhibits Type 1, as well.
