Title: How to find trans experienced or specialized BA surgeons?
Post by: Sleepnowmythrowaway on October 28, 2016, 08:52:00 AM
I've been googling for several days with no luck; how is it one finds a surgeon that is experienced or perhaps specialized in trans patients?

I'm likely to need a 2 stage surgery and thus would like to find someone within an 8 hour drive of Pittsburgh, as multiple flights to see the same surgeon would likely be prohibitively expensive.

How do you find a competent surgeon for trans surgery? I can't afford to **** this up; I've got one shot.

How and where did you find your surgeon?

I suggest you start looking into air fares. I purchased one for my mother and a monday flight was cheaper that the remainder of the week. Also if you book at a time other than summer or the holidays you will find flights are cheaper. You could make a cross country round trip for under $500.

On the other hand, if you have doctors treating you already, they may be able to suggest a good plastic surgeon for many of the non gender related surgeries. I had my nose and addams apple done by a local surgeon and had I desired it, I suspect he could have done a BA as well.

Hi, I am going to Dr. Christine McGinn. I am having a BA and GCS with her. GCS will consist of vagioplasty with a graph and later labiaplast in her office procedure room. Most likely I will have vaginal tattooing there too at some point. She is in New Hope PA and within a 5 hour drive from you. She  studied under Dr. Bowers.

The BA will be over the muscle round 550cc cohesive silicone implants.

Dr McGinn is trans.

I was also going to suggest McGinn. I know one of her clients.

There is also one or two I heard of in Jersey and a handfull of others I stumbled across recently during my PCP/HRT doc search.

The big problem you have in searching is most docs really don't like to advertise the fact that they cater to trans patients. We are, after all, such a small percentage of the potential client pool filled with potential transphobics.

Often it takes a lot of plain ole "Networking". The Philly Trans Conference would have been a great opportunity for you to gather info. It comes up in June(?) if that fits with your schedule. Or, check out the schedule from this year and see who might have been presenters. They usually have a plastic surgeon or two.

Try all sorts of LGBT organization sites and especially trans specific ones for providers and businesses. And then there is also local support groups. Don't forget PFLAG, they do a great job at trans outreach.

With being in the Pittsburgh area and it being a big college town try the college web sites LGBT areas, again for local businesses and medical. Also WVU in Morgantown is well within striking distance. There is also Whitmann-Walker clinic in DC which can help. Many of my group members use their services. There's got to be trans groups in the Harrisburg area that may have some leads

And when you get right down it, NYC, called Trans-Central by by wife, is at the outer reaches. It also has the great advantage of plenty of public transportation options from Pittsburgh

Heading in another direction is Cincinnati, a relatively short drive from Pittsburgh and perhaps plenty of public transportation options like shuttles and train.

The Philly Trans Health Conference will be Sept 7-9 this year.

McGinn deals with only trans. Everyone there are nice and so far I have only had a positive experience.

Not saying who you should go to. There are three doctors in Philly who do BA that I  know of, Dr. Kathy Rumer, Dr. Sherman Leis, and Dr. McGinn. I know the first two usually present at the conference. The wait for a consult can be long, longer for some doctors than others. You should be aware of the lead time in getting the consult and plan for it.

Dr. Rumor is not trained in labiaplasty (2nd stage), she stated such when questioned. I do not know if she does graphs.  She said she did the single stage GRS. This was from her presentation at the PTHC last summer.

I can not remember about Dr. Leis.

I am from Pittsburgh originally and got my breast aug done by a local surgeon, Dr. Rechevsky (spelling).  He did a great job on me (in 03!) and his office manager, Gaylyne is sweet.
