Title: Favourite Trans Media?
Post by: AshleyC on December 17, 2016, 09:58:54 PM
Curious what everyone's favourite trans (authored or about) media is. Be it TV series, film, book, music, whatever.

My current pick would have to be the album Transgender Dysphoria Blues by Against Me!

I just discovered it this week, but it has been on constant rotation since I found it. It's a loud, aggressive punk rock album, so YMMV.

Let's hear your recommendations!

Another vote for "Boy Meets Girl".  Currently, I enjoy the comic strip "Assigned Male" by Sophie Labelle.

I recently watched Boy meets girl, cried like a baby as well :). Michelle Hendley acted incredibly for not having any experience.  I'm sure elements of her own (well documented) personal journey were used to make Ricky's character much more authentic.  Wonderful movie.

That movie is great! I loved it. Saw it a year or so ago.

I really admire Ramona Xavier AKA Vektroid/Macintosh Plus. She pioneered vaporwave and just does great music. I also think its cool how wide-reaching an influence she's had. Usually the audience for a trans artist is limited, but by the nature of her style a lot of people probably don't even know her gender let alone that she's trans.

I also think Jayne County is really cool. She did early punk music, a lot of it about gender and sexuality, and was a huge influence on glam rock.

um and Breakfast On Pluto is actually pretty decent even though it is yet another film where a cis man plays a trans girl. I really enjoyed Cillian Murphy's performance.

and I like that Against Me! album too. I saw them last year actually. My friends and I had sort of followed them for a while, but I became a lot more interested when Laura Jane came out.

oh and also "Candy Says" is a beautiful song about gender dysphoria by my favorite band, The Velvet Underground. if anyone doesn't already know of them, I think they're really worth checking out in general (one of the first punk bands, super psychedelic), but they might be of particular interest to people on here because Lou Reed was one of the first songwriters to write about transsexuals with any humanity. I personally think he did a great job too for the most part.

In the '90s I was a big fan of horror writer Poppy Z. Brite. Much of "her" writing was very homoerotic. It wasn't until a couple years ago that I learned that "she" was a trans-man now known as Billy Martin. He is very open about being trans.

There is another writer in the horror field that is also trans, but I don't believe she is out as it were, so I won't name names. But I like her writing too. (edit. I just found out that she is out. Her name is Caitlyn Kiernan).

I recently watched a few episodes of Netflix's OA and was surprised to see a transmale character in it!

Boy meets girl is great, I have also just finished the audio book - Jennifer Finney Boylan, She's not there, but I have mixed feelings about that, while I found some parts enjoyable I also found it to be a bit drawn out with a few pointless stories and lacking in a little in the details department, it sort of fluffs over a lot of stuff I was generally interested in.

I love the comic Lumberjanes. One of the main characters, Jo, is a transgender girl.
