Title: How do two women dancing together twirl in full skirts?
Post by: Raell on January 01, 2017, 08:07:17 PM
I'm confused.

If the husband of a couple transitions to female, the couple goes ballroom dancing, and both women want to wear full-skirted ballroom gowns, how do they twirl without tangling their skirts?

This question just came up when my ex-husband, who says he plans to transition to non-binary female, and that he hopes we can get back together, reminded me of our recent anniversary where we danced on the beach at our wedding, and says he can't wait to wear a ballroom gown like I wore, when we go dancing together.

I tried to picture it, and didn't see how that would work.

Raell,

I assume you do some ballroom dancing.  Typically only the person "following" does any twirls.  I can think of one Cha-Cha dance move where both the leader and follower both do a 360 at the same time.  BUT even that move they turn in opposite directions so the dresses would just flow with each other and there would be no crashing of gowns.  It would actually potentially look pretty.

With that said - if both partners were wearing old fashion Hoop dresses it would be impossible to join in a tight box.  A loose box would be possible but still inconvenient.

Personally I'm not a good leader (not a lot of practice) so taking on a follower's role would be interesting.

Ah! True. I hadn't thought about it.

We were all doing some very non traditional Sufi-inspired dances for the New Year last night.  I couldn't say HOW it worked, but it did.  These were not ballroom gowns, but there were definitely maxi-dresses with some serious fabric, and partners were able to spin pretty well together.

Sounds like you had some fun!

After I posted that I then remembered when I was teaching in Mexico, I saw a traditional Mexican dance presentation, including one where women were twirling around each other in full skirts, and it was beautiful.

Nobody got tangled up.

Those dances were designed for that though.  Ballroom dancing in a tight box is slightly different.

I think you will just have to take turns in the skirts.
