can hrt cause weight gain? Everything I've read online said it makes you lose weight and not gain it so I'm worrying now.
HRT can cause you to gain weight as you loose muscle mass and if you still eat like you always did. Muscle burns a lot more calories then fat does
Uhmmmm last I checked, generally HRT makes you gain weight before losing it. Because Estrogen has an effect on your metabolism, it causes it to slow down so you no longer need as many calories in a day. Because of this, if you continue eating the same amount of calories you do right now, you will be more likely to gain weight. Few people do experience a weight loss, which can be contributed to loss of muscle with a proper diet.
Yeah, you'll need to adjust your calorie intake to avoid gaining weight.
On a well-balanced diet, my former male self needed around 2,000 kcal/day to maintain weight, more when exercising. When I had my elliptical trainer, and was doing a 60 minute work-out 5 days a week, I needed around 2,400 calories a day.
Now, on estradiol and testosterone nicely suppressed, I need 1,470 kcal/day to keep my weight steady, or when walking a lot, 1,550-1,600 kcal/day. Yeah, 500 food calories less a day, roughly. I get to be a little hungry [emoji39] much of the time.
I suppose it's a drawback of tinkering with the endocrine system. On the whole I am happy with the results, though. ;)

If you're on Spiro, you'll lose water weight up front. After you adjust to it, the weight shows up slowly via the Estradiol. If you are on spiro and have been for some time and then suddenly got off it....you'd be depressed to see how much water weight you gain and just how fast. As Michelle pointed out, screwing with the Endocrine system can play havoc.

ive been on spiro for 13 months.
I lost most of the weight I had pre-tranistion and once I was on HRT I started gaining weight, not a lot but some and it was harder to lose. Then tack on 8 years of hanging out with 20-somethings and keeping up with them on drinking beer and eating bad food and the weight really went on (less HRT at that point and more bad decisions).
But I am not fully sure if the added fat on my bum is a result of HRT or all that crap I ate and drank, but after losing almost all of that extra weight I was left with a nice(r) rear end and hips :)
Either way, the work to lose the weight definitely increases after HRT

When I stopped the spiro after getting the easter eggs chopped I gained a bit of weight, just one of the love hates about spiro or duretics
I am on a habit of running at least 3 miles a day... I hate running, but I do it so I don't gain weight from everyday eating. Canned vegetables is becoming my best friend right now too... green beans at 60 calories a can? I can live with that.
I was thinking about careers from an old thread of yours... have you consider working at place like Hooters? I imagine they get tipped well. Or be a barber for men (that will take time)
