Title: Vaginoplasty on NHS with Dr Phil Thomas
Post by: R R H on January 12, 2017, 01:31:31 AM
Hello all,

Yesterday I was approved for NHS funded vaginoplasty with Dr Phil Thomas in Brighton. The waiting list may be around 6 months but I'll also try to go on the cancellation list.

As some of you will know, I've had both an orchiectomy and FFS under Dr Sutin at PAI but the vaginoplasty is NHS funded which is a bit of a deal breaker for me at the moment.

I'm very happy about this and would welcome any thoughts.

xx

p.s. I do have the option of choosing Dr Bellinger or Dr Rashid. I don't particularly wish to go to CHX so that would leave Tina Rashid.

I'm happy with the idea of Phil Thomas' team though. A new surgeon, Dr Coker, seems to do a lot of the ops and I've seen good reviews. Of course, there will always be some unhappy people because not every operation goes perfectly. That's as true for Thailand as it is for the UK. Without being facetious, you see the same thing in restaurant and hotel reviews as for SRS. It's when you see a build up of unhappy clients that you really need to sit up, I think?

Dr Thomas and his team use a variety of methods these days: penile inversion and pen-scrotal inversion (scrota flap area) and he now uses the frenulum to construct the clitoris. I'm not interested in depth as I'm with a female partner and am not interested in taking a penis in my vagina. But I would wish for something that looks the part, although I'm acutely conscious that there's a massive variety in cis vaginas (hence the vagina wall exhibition).

It's a tricky one this. Would I fly to Thailand if I had oodles of money? Possibly. Perhaps, probably, though that would depend on my partner too. The fact is that I don't currently have a stash of cash so I'm going for what I feel is the best option under the NHS.

How do you go about getting srs on the nhs?

You need to go to your GP and get referred to a Gender Identity Clinic. Then you have to wait for your first appointment. Once you have that and you are in the system you will see the psychiatrists three times and I think you have to spend 12 months during that phase before you can then be referred for SRS under the NHS. They will be looking to ensure you are living 'RLE': Real Life Experience i.e. that you have gone ahead in and of yourself including name changes etc.

I hope this helps and others may fill this in more. But see your GP first. Then the ball begins rolling.

much love,

Rach

I took the nhs route as a child so if anyone under 18 has any quiries I can explain that process in detail, as it is quite different:) xx
