Title: NHS GRS/SRS Recovery Time
Post by: Sarah1981 on January 30, 2017, 04:02:45 PM
Hi there gals,

Just a quick question about recovery times after an MtF GRS/SRS opp.
Could anyone who's been through the procedure tell me how long it was until you could comfortably walk around, for an extended period of time, without incident.

Many Thanks,

Sarah.

2-3 months for me. I can pretty much walk around a few days after surgery but at very limited speed. Wasn't in pain or anything, just couldn't do it. After 3 months walking is back to my regular pace.

Depending on your tolerance for pain, 1-2 months though you might be able to do it earlier. The big issue is how weak you are after surgery. Today they have you out of bed 2 days after surgery unlike the 6 I had but you will find your endurance is pretty restricted for a while. The more you move around (within the surgeon's limits) the faster you will regain your strength.

I could comfortably walk about a half mile round trip by the second week; my main issue was just that I tired easily. (So I could go for longer walks, but then I'd need a nap.) By week 3, I had no significant pain except when sitting on hard surfaces for several hours.

Brassard had us up and walking by 18 hours post-op, and on day 3, the recommendation was to take a circuit of the residence (which was about a 10-minute walk, up and down two flights of stairs) every hour or so. I do think it helped to be active as soon as possible.

For me, walking wasn't the problem, it was the sitting.
Couple weeks after surgery I was going for short walks around the block, then steadily increased to long walks...and then hikes after a few months.
