Title: Getting a loan etc after changing gender marker
Post by: jagfel on February 04, 2017, 05:35:10 AM
Has anyone had any difficulties getting approved for loans and stuff like that after changing gender marker? I'm looking to buy a house this year but not sure if I should get my birth certificate and everything changed until after I'm approved. I've heard it can be difficult just for having a name changed with all the extra documents you have to provide so wondering if the changed gender marker adds to it or not.

I think it depends on where you live. Changing gender marker can vary wildly from state to state, country to country. I've read here some countries require RLE for a year or two. Some US states you have to jump thru hoops while other states it is much easier.
When you do change your gender marker, that's just the start. You have school records, taxes, social security, credit bureaus, former employers, insurance, investments, banking etc to change.

I'd almost think it'd be easier to get approved for your loan...then change everything afterwards.

There should be no issues as long as they can connect you with your credit history. This would mean informing the old company of the name change or calling the three credit reporting firms and updating your credit history. In my case, I didn't have a credit history before switching names so my credit history starts near the end of RLE when I took out my first credit card in the new name.

I have not had any issues. I was able to sign a new lease on my apartment, refinance my car loan, and get a new credit card within 3 months of updating all my documentation. I just needed to provide folks with my court order for my name change. Nobody cared about or mentioned the gender marker, probably because it was fairly obvious due to the name change.
