So iv been seeing a general therapist for a few months now for a couple reasons, including being transgender but not only. While he has been very helpful so far and id rather keep going to him if i can, he has no knowledge of transgender issues let alone enough to write a letter for me. I know informed consent is a thing but iv always been the cautious type and would rather get the letter from a professional if i can. One other thing iv been confused about is what kind of professional i need to get the letter, is any therapist who knows about the subject enough or do i need a psychologist to write it. From what i understand i can then find a GP or Endo who can prescribe hormones? Not really sure what to do currently ???

Well, from my experience is that there isn't one specific professional type which you have to see to have a referral. Based on local standards where I'm from, for the most part any medical professional who has received training on WPATH can complete the assessment and make the referral to an endocrinologist. This includes GPs, psychiatrists, psychologists, nurse practitioners, nurses, etc. Depending on what kind of therapist you have, even that person could do the referral provided they get up to speed on WPATH. A lot of times these "general" therapists will get you to seek out a gender therapist who already has the knowledge and experience instead of getting it themselves.

Hmmm... I have a personal friend who's a psychologist. I've known her for about 21 years and I was fully cross dressed when we met.
Incidentally, when I mentioned to her that I had talked to my doctor about hormones and how she'd refer me to someone who could help, my friend's response was "Well that's progress! !".
I get my hormones from my GP. She wanted a letter in my case only because of extensive addiction issues and old psych diagnosis. My PTSD specialist, who I have a good relationship with, signed a letter I penned and my doc loved it. It really depends on what your Dr wants. I'm in San Antonio and got the name of a good GP with extensive knowledge of the trans community. If your doc is not on board try a local support group, you should be able to get the info you need as well as lots of hugs and support. Any medical doctor *can* prescribe hormones, if you can talk them into it. Some might not want to, and some might not be competent to monitor your progress. Your best bet for the prescription is one who is WPATH-trained, and who therefore understands the goals and risks.
A WPATH-trained doctor will want a referral from a WPATH-trained "mental health professional". Quite a few professions can fill this role: doctors, psychologists, psychiatrists, nurses, even social workers with suitable training.
You could get your current therapist to refer you to a suitable person. You might have to do a little research to find out who is WPATH-trained in your area.

Another Marylander...nice to meet you. I am also looking for local doctors. I have heard good things about Dr. Samuel Westrick on Falls Road who does informed consent and treats many transgender patients. He seems to be highly rated. I live about 30 mins NW of Baltimore. Let us know what happens and maybe who you saw. We girls need to help each other find those who will help us.
Get a listing of the Endo's in your area. Start calling them and specifically ask if they'll prescribe mtf mones on an "Informed Consent" basis. If they say no, ask for direction regarding those who may do so. If you're actually ready, persistence will pay dividends. Good luck.
