Title: How long do you need to be on HRT to get an orchiectomy?

I know you have to be on HRT for 2 years before SRS but what about just an orchiectomy?

lilap,

Welcome to the site.

That is a really good question. I am not sure. We have a large membership and someone will be sure to share their experience.

I may shift this question to a category pretty much devoted to Orchies.

I also want to share some links with you. They are mostly welcome information and the rules that govern the site. If you have not had a chance to look through them, please take a moment:

Welcome to Susan's Place I am not sure there is a set standard but normally it's a year of HRT for SRS. For an Orchi, you would still need the therapy letters and you should be on HRT long enough to know if you are comfortable with the mental and physical changes. It could be as much as a year as an Orchi is just as irreversible as SRS though there are exception for other medical issues such as cancer risk.

When I saw my urologist he said he wouldnt do it on anyone under 1 year and would still need a psych letter and one from a endo but only if both agreed , but if it was cance it would be a different story but still requires specialists reports and psych letter,
But when I saw him the second time cause he removed a large cyst from that area he said just a psch letter would be needed  as Ive been on HRT for over 10 years but I also got one from my endo as well to be on the safe side and he didnt have any problems doing it,
But make sure you actually want it and speak with a endo thats treating you and you get all the info on it the pro's and con's, also if your planing on having SRS later speak with then as some surgeons will not do it if you've had a orchi and if they will do SRS after orchi make sure your urologist does the cutting in the right place.....
And have a good read through the orchi posts here and also read through the SRS / GRS post there is a wealth of knologe about there experiences..

Cheers Tracy

I've been on hormones for 16 months with part time (90%-all but public appearances for work)RLE, and my therapist says I am eligible for an orchiectomy.

I had my orchi 7 months after starting HRT. Two letters were required, both were one appointment deals. The letters aren't to satisfy your providers, they're to satisfy the insurance company.

I think it depends a great deal on the Urologist. Mine said 12 months on HRT and two letters (which I had) and he still seemed reluctant to do it. I got a third letter just to play it safe and he scheduled surgery the day he got that 3rd letter.
