Title: Airbnb or Hotel for Post-op recovery
Post by: Kahlid on March 28, 2017, 01:23:08 PM
Hi, everyone so I in a bit of a pickle with deciding between choosing whether I should stay in a hotel or find a place on airbnb. I'm paying out of pocket for everything, which includes my surgery and travel expenses which could run me somewhere between 8-9 grand. I still haven't decided between Dr. Hope or Dr. Steinwald because I want the inverted t method. Money isn't really tight but I still want to save if I can and also have a sense of privacy. So I suppose my question is should I suck it up and stay at someones house and get weird looks from them once they see me post-op for a week lol or hide away in a hotel room?

You would really have to screen those people. They would have to be extremely trans friendly and be okay with having someone who just had surgery in their house. There's the blood and surgical trash that would end up in places, eww.

Yea I was thinking about that as well, but maybe it the price is the same as a hotel I could rent out the entire place.

Why would there be people in the house with AirBnB? I've used it several times and it's always been unoccupied used solely for rentals. I'd lean towards AirBnB because recovery for top was uncomfortable as hell. I'd want the closest thing to a home as possible.

You can probably find an unoccupied Airbnb house for cheaper than a hotel, and you would have a full kitchen.

Well from my experience with AirBNB, it depends on what type of place you choose to rent whether or not there would be people in the house. The more preferences you want for example a place all to yourself would cost more as opposed to sharing a space with the owner like an extra bedroom.

If you're going with Steinwald then I'd recommend an AirBnb. From what I gather, he performs top surgery in Denver and the Denver/Aurora area can be pretty expensive due to the view and it's our biggest city. Even places like Boulder will rack up a pretty big price. But if you don't have a problem with travelling you can try staying in the Longmont/Loveland area. It's a lot cheaper. I live up in Fort Collins and it only takes about an hour or so to get to Denver. It's really not a bad drive at all.

I'll keep that in mind if I end up going with him as my surgeon, thanks for the advice. I don't mind an hour drive if it will save me some money!

AirBnB > Hotel. Just search for places where the host will not be present. That is an option you can filter for. I'd also make a point to take along some trash bags of your own for disposing of medical waste.

I only had good experiences with my time in Airbnb's. Terry and the other woman Denise (who drove me back to her home and got my prescription ) were fabulous and that's when I got my nose and breast done in Florida. When I go to India I'm debating hotel or Airbnb ...

Dario just rents a bunch of rooms in a big house(more than one house he manages ) in Seattle (to which i now reside ) ...

Thanks everyone for the helpful suggestions. I actually emailed Dr. Steinwald's staff to get an updated quote for top surgery and it looks like they went up 1,000 more than what I previously remember. I may have to look into Dr. Sherie if her prices are better also I'm hoping the Air BNB would cheaper there as well!  :D
