Title: A Session for Psychiatry Residents
Post by: stephanie_craxford on February 02, 2006, 05:56:38 PM
I got a call from a good friend who is a PhD at Queens University.  A professor contacted her who is doing a session for psychiatry residents in the near future.  He asked her for ideas and resources and wondered if she knew of anyone who would be interested in talking about their experience of being transgender or transsexual.  So, she immediately thought of me.  :)  The session is in March and there would be between 5 and 14 residents.  They are all people who have their medical training but are now specializing in psychiatry and therefore need to learn about gender identity since as you all know, it's listed as a disorder.  Of course I replied YES, so I'm now waiting for the details.  This will be the second time that Queens University has asked me to speak on Transsexual Issues.  Now what have I done :)

Thanks for the compliment Dennis but I am far from a resident expert.  I believe for that we need to turn to our post-op members such as yourself.

Steph :)

What have you done?

Well for one thing you have just branded yourself just as myself, Sheila and possibly a few others have.

Theory is different from practice. They won't learn anything from books without seeing and talking to a real live person. Those of you who put yourselves out there to be examples are to be admired by the rest of us.

Thanx peeps.

At the time it was a necessary step in my development.  To be able to discuss the issues I/we face in and after transition hopefully made a difference in the perception of a few politicians and the general public.  Unfortunately there are some who will never seperate their emotional issues from what is right.

There are also a few who are under the tg umbrella that cannot be satisfied with less than total legal inclusion in every aspect of society.
