Title: Estradiol patches and hot tubs
Post by: Tasha.McKenna on April 14, 2017, 07:34:44 PM
I've been told that heat will cause the patch to release the drug more quickly, and that saunas or tanning beds should be avoided.

My question here is "how hot is hot?" My hot tub is normally set to 104 degrees F, is that hot enough to be a concern?

Do I need to limit my use of the hot tub to the last day of a patch (just before I put on a new one), when presumably most of the drug has already been delivered?

Per a menopause support page called Hystersisters...

4. Heat exposure can cause your estrogen patch to release estrogen more quickly.

Heat exposure can cause your patch to release estrogen more quickly, so it is important not to expose it directly to heat. You may need to alter how frequently you use a hot tub, sauna, or tanning bed. Also, you should not place a heating pad directly over your estrogen patch. If you have regular contact with heat, talk to your doctor about how it may effect using an estrogen patch.

Entirely different things.  UV rays (sunshine etc.) cause many things to deteriorate.  Heat, on the other hand, often causes things to  be more reactive.  Of course, many things can also deteriorate in excessive heat.

Bottom line, follow the package directions.  If not sure, ask the pharmacist.

Yep, diffusion rates will definitely go up with increased heat.
Limiting it to the last day would certainly limit whatever damage might be done but asking the experts would be best.
