Makes you wonder why Muslims in European and western countries want shariah law.

Saudi Arabia is one of the creepiest countries on this planet.

A continual reminder that while I love travel, there are plenty of areas on this planet that are not safe for us. :'( My heart goes out to them, and those that live in fear of their own safety and lives.

I've traveled inside the Kingdom. It does indeed feel pretty creepy. Glad i will never go back. They are running out of water and oil prices continue to be impacted by discovering of new reserves and general cut back on consumption. They will likely get worse before things get better.

Pakistanis are sunni muslim mainly right? Somehow they manage to have some sort of trans community that at least does not kill them via police. Iran which is mostly shiah in faith has one of the largest transgender communities in the world. Presumably many of them make the pilgrimage to Mecca.

I suspect it's because of strict religion and absolute monarchy, they're stuck in the dark ages.  It's  beyond belief they can have such repressive practices in this day & age.

I believe most of the migrant workers that go to Saudi Arabia and the Emirates are there out of desperation and hope that they'll be able give their families back home some sort of financial support.  Unfortunately many are treated very badly.

Being transgender probably makes it even worse.  I can imagine many are also there to try to afford the medical costs of transitioning.  They're probably very aware how dangerous it is for them but feel this is their only solution.

The Saudis could simply deport people that break their laws, but instead seem to have a sadistic glee in torturing and killing people.  It's really all about power.  The Saudi royal family has a deal with the Wahhabis that allows them to retain power.  They keep power and the Wahhabis get their Puritan/Inquistion styled country and are funded to proselytize their beliefs in other countries around the world.

When religion is perverted it is usually about power and so many come to realize that they can control people with with religious puppet strings.

How about instead we use religious faith as a source of personal assurance and strength. Add to that community participation to help and assure humanities basic needs, take care of those less fortunate, lift up the lonely, the discarded and the sick?

Why doesn't this happen more? because there is more power in making people afraid.

It's a joke they 'earned' a seat on the UN Human Rights Council. A country which essentially just declared it illegal for transgender individuals to enter it.

If the world had learned its lesson from the oil crises in the 70s we wouldn't have consumed oil like drunken sailors for the last 40 years.  The reason the Saudis have gotten away with this is because the rest of the world values money and oil more than human rights.  The UN situation is just a reflection of how screwed up the world is, it's not the cause.

I'll never transit the Middle East when flying.

And for those Europeans going to Thailand for grs, you'll be carrying "illegal" drugs on the way back, and they include blood tests.

How about an airport layover in these countries? Would I be safe? I have some travel coming up which could require a 3 hour lay over... no plans to leave the airport or anything but you never know... any thoughts? Should I re-arrange my travel or just hide it?

Thanks - I did some more research and decided to fly via Frankfurt instead. Even though I can still hide it pretty well I just don't want to take any risk.

Something new I have to consider now.

I've read about people transiting and because the plane has fault they are delayed for a day and have to exit through customs. People travelling with essential medicines.
