Hello Everyone,
I came out this past March as transgender. At first to a small group of friends, then my parents, eventually came out on Facebook and to co-workers. So I've done this a bit backwards I suppose than most other people, since I've come out before I started my hormones (which I start at the end of the month), but in a way it has worked out for the best. Everyone who has stepped up in support of me has the time to take in the changes that are coming and to get used to the new name, also gave me time to make sure the new name and the diminutive forms fit. So far I've only had one bad reaction to my coming out and it was not the person I thought it would be; it was my mother and not my father who was most upset by this and she has said "good-bye" to me.
Besides that everything has been rolling along very smoothly, benefits of living in Vermont I suppose. I really want to thank everyone here, even though I have recently joined and started posting I have been using the topics and references here for guidance since I first decided to come out and a few years before. I'll make a longer post later about my journey thus far and as it unfolds in the future.

There is no One True Way of coming out or managing any transition related issues. I thin you are doing just fine. I am sorry to read about your mother. She may have had a lot of herself invested in the old identity, and it can take time to get over the relatively sudden shock of discovering her child is not who she thought they were.
