Hello everyone! I'm mtf and I'm not quite sure how this works because I'm new here, but I'm gonna give it a go.
So I started wanting to transition about 5/6 months ago and I plan to start HRT before I'm 18, which is another 7 months from now (It's sort of a long evaluation process where I live.) Luckily I have a supportive family.
I have been told by my therapist that I have a good starting point. I have no heavily masculine features on my face or body. I'm a shoe size 10(US), I'm 5'10.5, I weigh about 120 and I don't have a lot of muscle. My measurements are 32-27-34. My shoulder circumference is 40 inches.
But there is one thing I worry about because I have little muscle and I am a very skinny girl.
Will the effects on HRT be minuscule compared to other transwomen who have more body fat? Because I feel like I don't have enough fat for it to make a noticeable difference when it's redistributed, if that makes sense.
I'm just a little confused, so if any skinny transwomen that started young would write back and tell me about their experiences, I would appreciate it a whole lot! Thanks :)
Welcome to Susan's Place. At this point in the game you shouldn't worry much about your weight unless you start gaining a lot in a short period of time. Testosterone cause the body to burn more calories and part of the HRT package normally includes a blocker that reduces testosterone levels. It's not uncommon to gain weight once you start HRT so if you gain it slowly, hopefully most of it will go where you want it to go. Many women start out with minimal body fat and as they move through puberty, they tend to fill out so check back in a couple of years and I think you will be happy with the results.

You need to gain weight because your going to see less changes being as skinny as you are and also if you gain weight your shoulders won't look broud.

It's impossible for me to gain weight. I have tried, and the highest I've gone is like 125 :/
But I've also heard that while muscle goes down, your fat goes up on HRT. Like an exchange of fat weight and muscle weight if that makes sense.
Things will change on HRT. Trust me! This coming from someone who started back in 2004, I was at 125 lbs, quickly went all the way up to 155 lbs. In a matter of months. No joke. No way I can ever go back to that weight unless I starve myself for a few days every week, maybe.

its not true for all. I had the same measurements as you before hormones except my shoulders were a bit smaller and I'm 5'7. After hormones I gained 10 lbs which put me at 130lbs and now I'm losing muscle weight and am almost back to my original weight which was 120lbs and I even eat like a pregnant woman and still no weight gain.. Since your 5'10 you should be atleast 140 to be healthy.

Actually for me to be healthy at my height, I need to be healthy. And I am :P
I've been skinny all my life, even when I used to eat junk food day in and day out. I eat very healthy now, and I'm still skinny. The ideal for me is losing muscle weight, while gaining fat weight. I wouldn't mind gaining a few extra pounds, but I don't want to gain as much 20. And that's just for me personally. I would like to lose some inches at the waist, gain some inches at the hips and of course breasts. Hopefully I will see those results since I'm starting younger than most.
Thanks for sharing :)
It sounds like you have about as ideal a starting point as you can ask for. HRT is magical, but should be even more so for someone of your age.
I'm not going to lie, I'm more than a little envious.

i started at 21, your past puberty at 18 so facial bone structure won't change unless most of it is facial fat, but considering your weight it's probably all bone. Just because you start young means nothing. Hormones act differently with different people. Some gain weight, some lose it, and some just stay the same weight. You might eat healthy, but you have a BMI lower than 18. That's far from a healthy weight.

BMI does not determine if someone is healthy or not, though :/ If it did, I could never be healthy, no matter how much I tried. And I know for fact that the younger you start, the better the results are of HRT.
And actually, you are not done growing bone structure until you're around the age of 25 :).
I guess you could just let happen what happens. It's an impossible question to answer because no one has the same starting point, and HRT will have a different effect on each person.
The common advice I see here is mainly about being healthy, and your doctors will monitor you and the effects of the HRT. Most people won't change how they do things or how they live until they are given a reason. However, when given a reason by the doctor...listen.
I'm kind of lucky, I'm also 5'11" but I started at over 200 lbs with a BMI pushing 29. I haven't consciously changed my habits, but I definitely eat less, continue to exercise regularly and now I'm below 175 and have a BMI of 24.3. The weight loss was gradual so I benefited in breast growth. I wouldn't try and do anything particular before starting HRT...wait until you and your doctor see how the hormones affect you, then adjust if needed.
Good luck on your journey
I started at age 27 5'9" and 123 pounds. I wore a size 0 pants and 6 top (because of my shoulders). Now, almost 9 months in, I have gained 25 pounds and am a 6 pants and top. None of the weight went to my stomach or waist. You might be surprised if you gain weight. It made a huge difference in how feminine I looked.
