I have my top surgery consultation coming up in about a month. I'm really excited and can't believe I've come this far! I have some questions in mind that I want to ask the surgeon but I was wondering what you guys who have already had top surgery discussed during your consultations. Is there anything unexpected to be prepared for? Any questions you felt were important to have answered? Have any tips or suggestions?
I'll be having D.I. and my consultation is with Dr. Rumer right outside of Philly.
I had my consult on Tuesday :). First off the surgeon asked me some basic health questions (do I smoke, am I allergic to anything etc). Then I was asked to do the examination, the surgeon only took literally a 2 sec glance at my chest to determine I needed a double incision. So far less embarrassing than I thought it would be. The surgeon then explained the procedure. I asked if there was any chance of keeping the nipples attached to the nerve (I heard some surgeons do this but not if he did), why he didn't use drains and what products he'd recommend for the scars. Then I just told him I was happy with him doing my surgery and met with his PA to schedule the pre op appointment, surgery date and post op appointment. I realised after leaving I should have asked him what is the likelihood of me getting pain in my chest after I've healed and how long I need to wear the medical binder for.
To add a surgeon, like a doctor, should be empathetic; willing to listen to your concerns and simply someone you can get along with. Upon meeting my surgeon I knew what others said about his personality were true and that I made the right choice.
Congrats on setting a surgery date and thanks for the insight! I wouldn't have thought to ask about what kind of pain I might get after everything has healed so I'll add that to my list of questions.
I was nervous about anybody having to see my chest too but since I'm doing my consultation over Skype she let me send in some photos so I don't have to go shirtless during the actual consult. She and everyone in her office have been great about helping me feel comfortable and answering some questions I already had. I'm still nervous about the consult but it's more like an excited nervous now :)
