Title: Birth certificate confusion
Post by: Ayame Wolfe on June 12, 2017, 05:05:52 AM
I'm trying to figure out all the legal things I need to do during my transition. The thing that's confusing me the most is the birth certificate. If I was born in Illinois, but live in another state, which state do I need to deal with to change my birth certificate? Please, help me if you can.

Hi Ayame, welcome to Susan's Place! Your birth state is where you change your birth certificate. Here's some helpful information: https://www.susans.org/wiki/Category:Documentation_changes

Illinois appears to require a doctor's letter. Always check with the local court that you'll be dealing with to make sure you have the newest rules. Good luck!

Thank you for helping me with that. It's a little while off before I'll be ready for that step. Just want to make sure I get things done the right way.

Changing your birth certificate in Illinois is not very difficult, you can do it yourself just by filing the paper work.
Illinois will issue a new birth certificate and seal your original, so it would take a court order for anyone to discover your original.
